Raw Food Vegans Thin But Healthy, Study Finds
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=751&e=1&u=/nm/20050329/hl_nm/health_raw_dc

"Because of their low calorie and low protein intake, raw food vegetarians have a low body mass index (BMI) and a low total body fat content. It is well documented that a low BMI and weight loss are strongly associated with low bone mass and increased fracture risk, while obesity protects against osteoporosis."

<snip>

Fontana expected the vegans to have low vitamin D levels because they avoid dairy products, which are fortified with the vitamin. But in fact their vitamin D levels were "markedly higher" than average.

<snip>

And the vegans had low levels of C-reactive protein, an inflammatory molecule that is becoming linked with the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic disease.

I'm not a raw food vegan, but I think there's quite a bit of interesting facts in this article that dispute that crap about "being vegan is unhealthy."

1. Good article, though the spin is retarded
"obesity protects against osteoporosis." Grrrreeeeeeat. I may have a heart attack by the time I'm 50, but at least when I DO collapse, I probably won't break a hip.

Idiots.

2. Obesity didn't protect my mom from osteoporosis!
Lets try stacking up the rates of OP in obese American women against healthy African or Asian women with primarily plant based diets. See how that one comes out. My money is not on the fat Americans, I can tell you.

That aside, I'm really amused by the way they went into this study expecting frail and decrepit vegans and then grudgingly admit they were WRONG. And how we are "clever enough" to get enough sunshine for our vitamin D. :wtf: They were expecting vegans to be terribly stupid? Love their conclusions too! We have lower levels of harmful substances that cause heart disease, diabetes and cancer......... but they DON'T ADVOCATE the diet that produces these results.

:banghead:

3. I really liked the "clever enough" comment
Look! Doc! You have to come see this! Over there! Subject No. 13 appears to be exhibiting a behavioral reaction to the light gradient! Could he be doing it on purpose, or is it a reflex?

It was really hysterical, honestly. Good for either a laugh or a cry, depending on how you look at things.
