A dietitian's advice for
preventing swine flu: vegan sausages

Author: Virginia Messina, MPH, RD

Many of my fellow dietitians have jumped into the swine flu discussion with assurances that it is safe to eat pork. Swine flu, they say, is not transmitted through ham, bacon and other meats from pigs. But, of course, it’s the production of these foods that gave us swine flu in the first place....So while eating pork may not directly cause swine flu, the demand for pork does cause it....Moving away from meat and other factory-farmed products like dairy and eggs is the only responsible and meaningful response to diseases like swine flu. And happily, there are some great foods on the market to help consumers do this.

The Engine 2 Diet

Professional athlete-turned-firefighter Rip Esselstyn is used to responding to emergencies. So, when he learned that some of his fellow Engine 2 firefighters in Austin, TX, were in dire physical condition-several had dangerously high cholesterol levels (the highest was 344!)- he sprang into action and created a life-saving plan for the firehouse. By following Rip's program, everyone lost weight (some more than 20 lbs.), lowered their cholesterol (Mr. 344's dropped to 196), and improved their overall health.

Now, Rip outlines his proven plan in this book. With Rip as your expert coach and motivator, you'll transform your body and lifestyle in a month. His plant-powered eating plan is based on a diet of whole foods, including vegetables, whole grains, fruit, legumes, seeds and nuts.

McDougall Program Videos

Physician and nutrition expert who teaches better health through vegetarian cuisine. John A. McDougall, MD. has been studying, writing and "speaking out" about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 30 years. Dr. McDougall believes that people should look, feel great and enjoy optimal health for a lifetime. Unfortunately, many people compromise their health unknowingly through poor dietary habits.

A selection from Dr McDougall's instructional videos of how to successfully transition to healthy plant-based eating. Includes cooking demonstrations, lectures and meal-planning.

DVD: Vegan Fitness: Built Naturally

Starring professional athletes Robert Cheeke (Body Building Champion), Tonya Kay (Professional Dancer and Dance Instructor), and Champion Ironman Triathlete Brendan Brazier (author of the best-selling THRIVE DIET), this inspiring documentary film revealing the success stories of these high performance vegan athletes including nutritional advice, their training programs, how they eat and food shop, and dramatic footage of their performance highlights.

Justine Mayella CD

A native of Washington, D.C., Justine Mayela has built a 25-year professional career as vocalist and musician. Because of her love for animals, Justine became a vegetarian at age 16. In 2002 she visited Farm Sanctuary, an experience that resulted in her commitment to a vegan lifestyle and her decision to dedicate her life to helping animals.

These twin passions led to her first efforts at songwriting and to this album. Accompanying herself on guitar and backed by eight accomplished musicians, Justine sings 10 original songs on her new CD, including the title anthem We Are All One Family. In songs that range from the humorous to the heartfelt, she stirs our souls and opens our eyes with the complementary themes of compassion for animals and a vegan lifestyle.
