Charles River Labs bakes 32 monkeys to death.
More atrocity from the world of animal testing...

Officials at an animal testing facility in Sparks say they have improved security and training policies and added new alarm systems after 32 monkeys died May 28 from overheating.

“This was an isolated incident that occurred in a single room at our quarantine facility and no other primates were affected,” Amy Cianciaruso, a spokeswoman for Charles River Laboratories, said in an e-mail. “The death of these primates is a terrible and unfortunate tragedy.”

The primate deaths came to light Thursday when local animal rights activist Coral Amende was tipped off by a Charles River employee.

Cianciaruso said the incident was not made public because the company is concerned for employee safety after the “increased level of extremist activity targeting individuals involved in biomedical research.”

<snip>

The overheating in quarantine was caused by “several human errors,” despite preventive measures in place, Cianciaruso said. She said an alarm system was in place “but human error failed this system.”

Glad we have scientists watching over them. Keeps them safe.

Oh, and btw...if this was about one dog, left in a car in 100 degree heat here in Florida, that person may be charged as a felon.

Just something to think about...

1. Your last point is a sad indication of how we treat animals.
Cute and fuzzy pet = protected by strong humane treatment laws.
Cute and fuzzy primate = property of the research facility.

4. Born in China, under probably ghastly conditions,
shipped here, mistreated and baked to death. These poor animals probably never had a single enjoyable moment in their whole short lives.

I've often wondered what it would be like to live with no conscience. I guess I could call employees at Charles River to find out.

Call to end animal pain-research

Using animals to research pain has "limited value" and should be replaced by newer technologies, argues a panel of medical experts from across England.

Animal tests can only simulate some aspects of chronic pain and are too simplistic, their report says.

With newer brain-imaging techniques, more studies could be done in humans, they write in the journal Neuroimage.

Ministers said at present "licensed animal use remains essential to develop improved healthcare technologies".
