Enjoy, all. Gore...vegetarianism.
I tossed it out there. Sick of the tap dancing around it.

Welcome to what might be my demise.

1. My Debate instructor asked the same question after we watched AIT in class.
And she's an omni. So you're not making some whacko, radical point there.

I mean Time fucking Magazine, pinko counterculture hemp paper zine that it is  had going veg as one of their suggestions for reducing one's impact in their global warming issue.

2. I know.
I was actually having this discussion with someone on the phone about this. He's kind of a "big dog" in the AR movement, and I mentioned liberals and DU in general and how things went politically on a big site like this.

Bastard said, "well, why don't you ask them?"

I said, "because they'll crucify me."

He said, "better people than you have been crucified."

Then, THEN, asshole that he is, said, "I wouldn't worry about being crucified for that. Neither would X nor X nor X."

Next time I see him, I'm kicking him in the ass. Tonight, I'm hotlinking the thread to him. I'm hoping it's good for something less than a laugh. I have hope for my fellow DU'ers.

4. Nope, this is one of those
church/state things.

I won't diss DU to make a point with my AR friends. Yeah, they'll get the link, but I'll try to paint a better picture if I can. I try to promote "the team" even if there's no xxxxxxxx@xxxx.org on DU.

Check your e-mail though. I might drop a hint or two...

7. DU is so
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 10:24 AM by Annces
people oriented, it is ridiculous. People on DU don't really care about the overall issue of how animals are treated. They care about the little sensationalist story, just like on television. Anything related to animals brings out lots and lots of people who are so insensitive. But how they cry if their little toe gets stubbed, or you criticize their lifestyle at all.

Edit to add: You know there are people with really backward, selfish ideas on other topics, such as poverty, sexism, racism, but they are politically correct about themselves in DU company. It has not yet become politically correct to care about the pain and suffering of animals.

8. It is very annoying how every time vegetarianism is mentioned
you get the same people, and the same comments, jumping on us as if we're the militants.

And their arguments are so damned Libertarian. "Because I want it." "Because I like it." "I need meat every day."

Would they accept that desire is a good enough justification for other destructive practices? x(

9. My health insurance company (!) raised this question in their latest newsletter.
The subject was "Going Green" and believe it or not, the #1 thing they listed was, "Go vegetarian."

Yes, I about passed out from shock.

I was all excited about posting it here but I realized you had to be a member of the group to read the article, which was well-written, I thought.

Thanks for posting that.

10. Aaaarghhh!
Just...aaarghh. And apparently I didn't even see the worst posts, judging by the responses to the "ignoreds". Most of the time I am glad to have DU, but times like this it just feels hostile and I see no point in dealing with it.

Anyway, kudos to you for having the guts to wade in with that question, which is one I've often wondered about myself.

Sigh.

11. The now-locked copycat was the best.
Never had my very own GD 10 recs to the Greatest Page personal attack.

What's funny, is that it only brought more attention to the thread it mocked.

15. Al Gore's fish dinner turns out green
I was just reading about this yesterday.

From http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2007/07/19/eagore119.xml

The reaction was swift: writing in in the Australian Daily Telegraph, Rebecca Keeble of Humane Society International, a conservation pressure group, complained of the danger to the species from "from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities".

She noted that "more than 50 per cent of toothfish traded is illegally caught, and includes juveniles vital to the ongoing toothfish population". She called on the US government to help crack down on illegal fishing by sanctioning Spain for allowing its nationals to fish illegally for the species in conservation areas.

And in the meantime, she acidly suggested, "Al Gore could choose something else to eat". Her attack on the former vice-president, and his implied hypocrisy, were rapidly picked up by bloggers around the world.

But the fish enjoyed by the Gores were not endangered or illegally caught.

Rather, the restaurant later confirmed, they had come from one of the world's few well-managed, sustainable populations of toothfish, and caught and documented in compliance with Marine Stewardship Council regulations. The Gores' spokesman, Kalee Kreider, admitted that the fish has been on the menu, but said: "The Gores absolutely agree with this humane society and the rest of the environmental community about illegally caught Chilean sea bass.
