horrible diseases gay sheep.

"Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), a school that has received criticism in the past for torturing monkeys in its labs, has officially been outed. Information has been brought to light about ridiculous “gay sheep” experiments that are being conducted at the school. You heard right—OHSU experimenter Charles Roselli is spending millions of taxpayer dollars to kill homosexual rams and cut open their brains in an attempt to find the hormone behind homosexual tendencies so that these tendencies can be changed. Roselli is also working with experimenter Frederick Stormshak of Oregon State University (OSU), who has surgically inserted an estrogen implant in the bodies of these rams in an effort “to restore tissue levels of estrogen comparable to those of heterosexual rams and affect sexual behavior accordingly.”

To put it simply, these experimenters believe that homosexuality is a defect that needs to be fixed, and they’re cutting open and killing gay sheep to do it. Roselli has made it very clear that he intends to use the findings of his experiments to “cure” humans next. In his application for public funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), he states that “this research also has broader implications for understanding the development and control of sexual motivation and mate selection across mammalian species, including humans.”"

Got a minute to fire off a letter to stop this abusive and deeply homophobic project?

1. Done!
My message:

I find it appalling that experimenters Charles Roselli of OHSU and Frederick Stormshak of OSU are cutting open and killing gay sheep in an attempt to "cure" homosexual tendencies. Being gay is not a defect or disease. I urge you to stop wasting millions of taxpayer dollars on these ridiculous experiments. I am sure that you want your university to be known for making real medical advancements that actually benefit humans, not for torturing animals and promoting homophobia.

If this is allowed to continue who will experimenters like this decide they need to "cure" next? Perhaps it will be people like you or your loved ones.

2. Wow...I'm sooo happy that gay sheep are dying to figure out why I'm gay.
:sarcasm:

I sent a letter off to them.

5. Doesn't help me, unless they start cutting open the brains
of bisexual sheep. But they probably just tell bi sheep "You're really gay, and afraid to acknowledge it." And THEN they cut their brains open.

3. Holy shit. That is Nazi science, pure and simple....

...that is horrific in the extreme... :nuke:

Here's what I wrote:

"The experiments done by Charles Roselli of OHSU and Frederick Stormshak of OSU with respect to cutting open and killing gay sheep in an attempt to "cure" homosexual tendencies, is an abomination, and smacks of Nazi "science". What is worse, is that these "Doctors", have obviously decided that a cultural viewpoint determines what is right and wrong in an individual, to the point, that the very biology of that person should be changed, in order to fit within that cultural viewpoint. This is a sick usage of science. I hope this is not what it has come to in our universities - i.e. obvious pandering to a conservative social agenda - in order to conduct science, and receive grants."

4. Follow-up: Just got a response from a "Dr. Robertson"....
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 04:52 AM by Robeson
...someone who I didn't even write to. Never-the-less, here is Dr. Robertson's response. BTW, I'm not his "friend". Anyway, here it is:

Dear friend,

I recently became aware of PETA's concerns about this research. Thank you for this chance to respond.

Let me start by saying the information you have received from PETA is incorrect. We have contacted PETA to let them know. I expect that their Web site will be corrected shortly. We also expect they will be contacting you with an email to correct their error.

The study that PETA urged you to write me about is indeed based in sheep. However, it is not being done to "cure homosexuality." Homosexuality is not a disease. I join you and our researchers in being personally offended by anyone who suggests that it is.

In fact, over the years, our researchers have been contacted by several gay and lesbian groups who appreciate our scientific results which support their beliefs that homosexuality is genetic and biological, not a choice.

As for the animals in this study we care deeply about them and they are treated ethically. All our research is conducted under the strict rules of the Animal Welfare Act and National Institutes of Health guidelines. It was funded by the federal government only after being reviewed by and approved top scientists in the field. In addition, panels of experts at both universities, which include members of the public and trained veterinarians, approved the research before it was allowed to commence and OHSU animal care is overseen by the US Department of Agriculture and AAALAC.

Thank you for the chance to respond. I also ask that you please join us in contacting PETA at Info@peta.org and ask that they correct their information about this research.

Thank you,

Joe Robertson, M.D., OHSU
