Antique Stradivarius violin 'replicated' by radiologist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15926864

A Stradivarius violin has been "recreated" using an X-ray scanner normally used to detect cancers and injuries, according to researchers.

The US-based group used a computerised axial tomography (CAT) scanner on the 307-year-old instrument to reveal its secrets.

They then used the data recovered to build "nearly exact copies".

The team said the technique could be used to give musicians access to rare musical equipment.

1. We'll see
There have been lots of claims of replicating the Cremona violins of Stradivarius, Amati and Guarneri. Even if true no violinists of note will admit it. My wife claims to be able to hear the difference of a Guarneri and a Strad played by the same violinist and she prefers the Guarneri.

2. i watched a documentary on how important these intruments are to classical music and how
few are available there are to classical violinists.

the collectors of the violins are really very good about letting people use them -- but there are a lot of players vying to use them for this concert or that -- & most of the time they really must kept in controlled environments.
