Team democraticunderground.com is now #645 on the top teams
list at climateprediction.net. The next trickle should kick us up to the 630s. At this pace, we should make it to the high 500s in another week or so.

I also loaded the BOINC software on my old, 930MHz machine, but that sucker is going to take FOREVER to get results.

Would love to have other DUers join us. . . . .

2. What is this about?
I went to the website and saw a list of names of organizations. Apparently this concerns some kind of experiment. But what does climateapps do? What is going on?

What is climateprediction.net?
Climateprediction.net is the largest experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century. To do this, we need people around the world to give us time on their computers - time when they have their computers switched on, but are not using them to their full capacity.

Why?
Climate change, and our response to it, are issues of global importance, affecting food production, water resources, ecosystems, energy demand, insurance costs and much else. There is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth will probably warm over the coming century; climateprediction.net should, for the first time, tell us what is most likely to happen.

What do we want you to do?
You can download a climate model from this website. It will run automatically as a background process on your computer whenever you switch your computer on. It should not affect any other tasks you use your computer for. As the model runs, you can watch the weather patterns on your, unique, version of the world evolve. The results are sent back to us via the internet, and you will be able to see a summary of your results on this web site.

6. Thanks.
How much space does this take on your computer? Does it slow your computer down?

8. You can set the project limits
The parameters for using your computer can be configured to suit your needs. For instance, you can have the model shut down while you're doing work, or even set the particular hours that it works.

Since I only use my laptop for a few hours every evening, and most of that is surfing the web, I just let the model run all the time. On weekends when I do my most intense computer work (and crank up Photoshop and other hungry programs) I suspend the model, then resume before I go to bed.

The only possible issue I've seen so far is heat buildup due to constant operation. Just to be on the safe side I set my laptop on a small wire rack (from the local dollar store), to improve air circulation. Two months into the project, no problems at all.

21. Not sure how well the Windows version cooperates
Under Linux and Mac OS it doesn't seem to slow down or get in the way of anything. The process runs at lowest priority, which means it only gets full use of the CPU when nothing else needs it.

Also, it should be noted that CPDN is one of the more 'irritable' distributed-computing projects around. It needs a stable computer if its going to complete any work. However I think it is the most worthwhile. :)

9. I've got mine configured to use as much space as it needs.
My Dell uses about 1.95GB; my Compaq uses about 62MB. It will allocate space according to your machine.

If I'm burning CDs or doing something that uses a lot of CPU cycles, I suspend it & restart it when I'm done. I leave it running full tilt when I'm surfing or DUing.

7. Cliff Notes answer
You do some scientific number crunching on your own computer (during downtimes) and then communicate the results back to the project.

The result of this distributed computing is providing the equivalent of a supercomputer for the researchers.

I've been running climateprediction on my laptop at home and after two months I'm about 80% through my assignment!! Woohoo!! The climate scenario is in Phase 3, modeling climate in the year 2050, and I've been monitoring the globe graphic to see if anything really weird is happening to the planet yet. :bounce:

11. This looks pretty cool, I just downloaded it myself.
My machine has 3.4 a gigahertz processor and 1024 megabytes of RAM, so I should be able to crunch quite a bit of data. ;)

Now I just have to find out how to join the team...

13. That sounds a bit weird.
Did you register before you loaded the BOINC software? When you look at your account, are you able to join a team?

14. Dunno but it is a moot point now.
I didn't realize my dad already had it installed and he was pretty pissed off. Now I'm just running the classic version, but I don't think that can count for the team can it?

When I go into the team management functions, I see your email addr. Congrats! Your name will show up in team stats with the first trickle you send.

20. Thanks for posting this, unhappycamper
I have been on another team since February.

Maybe you should post links to this thread in Computer Support and Climate/Energy forums as well?

BTW - I was just made User Of The Week on the CPDN board. Still have to send them my info :p
