My Father's Brief Affair

MY FATHER'S
BRIEF AFFAIR

By Frank Kaiser

When someone complains about how "things ain't like they used to be," the "used to be" is often the 1950s.

Drawing from narrow, selective memories, we 60- and 70-somethings remember fondly the sweet innocence of that era. The idyllic domesticity of Father Knows Best. The unsullied humor of I Love Lucy. The temperance of kids, safe and content, wearing and doing as they were told.

Movies didn't swear, TV had no sex, and magazines revealed only the smiling, wholesome side of life.

Sounds boring, doesn't it? It was.

Except for our cars.

This is the story of my father's cars.

1. I remember seeing that model of car as a child
I'd see them in the parking lot.

Thanks for exposing me to what looks like a fun new website (as a newby at geezerdom)!

3. I learned to drive on a '54 Olds...
and my last (and I probably really mean LAST) American car was a 1988 Olds Touring Sedan.
Both were great highway cars that got driven mostly in the city.

The '54 had a 324 cubic inch v8 engine with a Carter 4 barrel carb and would really run if properly adjusted.
The 1988 had a v-6 2100cc engine with fuel injection and I was more concerned with mpg than mph and did handle very well.
(Also had 8 way blue leather seats and a Bose sound system.)
Sold it when I retired last year.
Very sad.
( Driving a VW and a Hyundai now. OK, but little fun.)

Have a great day.

mark
(who will soon be 61)

4. I had a '49 Olds 88
It was maroon and cream colored. When the '55 Chev came out with the Power Pack, I'd beat 'em by a half a car length. I wasn't too bright, though, and burned out the engine.
