Christmas as a federal holiday. Does this violate the separation of church and state?

2. Strictly speaking, yes.
Long posts being a pain in the ass, I will only say that nitwits like Bill O'Reilly use the fact that Xmas is a federal holiday to argue that the US is a Christian nation. You don't have to tell me how idiotic that argument is. And I don't have to tell you how eagerly the right wing Christians lap up crap like O'Reilly bloviates (to use his own word).

Those of us who ardently believe in the separation of Church and State would be better off if Xmas had not become a federal holiday.

James Madison was against the government proclaiming a day of thanksgiving...imagine how he would have felt about sanctioning Xmas by making it a federal holiday.
