Since marriage is so threatened, why doesn't a "grass-roots" movement
start for outlawing divorce?

First thing, that would buy in the Catholic vote, where you have to go through strict hoops to get married correctly, and then even stricter hoops to get divorced.

Second thing, the Repukes love to hype the "downfall of civilization" caused by the divorce rate, so make it illegal. Anybody divorced is an outlaw. Make it retroactive so that Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, etc. are multi-time losers (oh wait, that would be redundant).

1. They would be serial divorcists. The FBI would need to
profile them. Newt would be kept in a glass cage and young FBI profilers would come to have him help in tracking down the latest, infamous fundamentalist who had perpetrated a string of grizzly (*shudder*) divorces. This should be actively explored.

2. You know
there actually was a time when divorce was socially unacceptable. So your question, which I know is laced with irony, is actually pretty on target!

3. I've often wondered why these "pro-traditional marriage"ists
aren't out there fighting to end things like adultery and domestic violence that are real threats to marriage. I can only conclude that these are parts of the "traditional" marriage that they want to protect so much.

5. Because They Really Don't Care About Marriage
No, that is not it--they are adulters and batterers. You don't stop your own bad behavior!

4. Some red states have started "covenant marriage," making divorce harder.
