Holy War: religious crusade against gays reaching Biblical proportions
(If I may toot my own horn for a moment, for the past year, I have been sending Mr. Moser articles and documentation on anti-gay groups that he said he found "very helpful.")

Holy War
The religious crusade against gays has been building for 30 years. Now the movement is reaching truly biblical proportions

The audience erupts during Pat Buchanan's prime-time speech at the 1992 Republican National Convention. 'There is a culture war going on in our country for the soul of America,' Buchanan famously declares.
(Jennifer Warburg)

On June 26, 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the convictions of two Texas men arrested for having sex. Writing for the majority in Lawrence v. Texas, Justice Anthony Kennedy said that the two men were "entitled to respect for their private lives." The state, he declared, "cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime."

The decision was unusually popular. A national survey found that 75% of Republicans and 88% of Democrats wanted to see sodomy laws struck down. But not everyone cheered.

<snip>

For anti-gay crusaders, who have been fighting gay rights for three decades, Lawrence was the most unsettling court decision since Roe v. Wade. Fundamentalist groups had filed 15 briefs supporting Texas' sodomy laws, only to see their arguments — that gay sex was a threat to public health and "traditional family values," and that gay people do not deserve equal rights — shot down.

In 2002, Moore wrote a lengthy concurrence in a custody case involving a lesbian mother. After describing homosexuality as "abhorrent, immoral, detestable, a crime against nature," Moore asserted that "he State carries the power of the sword, that is, the power to prohibit conduct with physical penalties, such as confinement and even execution. It must use that power to prevent the subversion of children toward this lifestyle."

1. "a crime against nature"
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 01:10 PM by BattyDem

Apparently, homosexuality occurs throughout nature and therefore cannot be a crime against it. As usual, it's humans who have a problem with nature because of their religious beliefs. :eyes:

Why are mainstream religions so against sexuality? After all, if you believe humanity was created by a higher being, than that being also created sexuality, so why would it be considered dirty or wrong? I never understood that.

4. Gay Penguin for America
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 02:41 PM by IanDB1

Gay Penguin: Just as Good
Two of the Bush is worth a bird in the White House:

"I'm also not very analytical. You know I don't spend a lot of time thinking about myself, about why I do things." - President George Bush, aboard Air Force One, June 4, 2003

Many commentators will observe that Gay Penguin himself is not very analytical, nor does he spend time thinking about himself and why he does things. You see, Charles Darwin once wrote about animal intellect:

"It may be freely admitted that no animal is self-conscious, if by this term it is implied that he reflects on such points, as whence he comes or whither he will go, or what is life and death, and so forth." - Darwin, "The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex."

So, if this lack of self awareness is, as Mr. Bush suggests, a political strength, surely no one can "out penguin" an "out penguin"?

But there's more. As we know, a penguin has no real depth of understanding regarding his own death, or the death of others. But perhaps you will agree that Gay Penguin's grasp on such matters is at least as intelligent as Bush's. Consider this thought, but instead of coming from the president of the united states, coming from a telepathic communication with a penguin:

"Look at these different places around the world where there's been tremendous death and destruction because killers kill." - President George Bush, Washington, D.C., Jan. 29, 2004

While an animal like a monkey or elephant may be able to understand death as well as Mr. Bush does- that indeed, what a killer does is kill things- a Penguin might, too. You see, something that Mr. Bush, a Monkey, an Elephant and a Penguin all have in common is that they are all mammals ahem- creatures of instinct. So, it would be safe to say that yes, a Penguin, too, understands that "killers kill."

That's why Gay Penguin walks away from loud, scary people, as well as any natural predator, such as the terrorist Leopard Seal, which eats penguins alive because it "hates freedom".

(both quotes via McSweeney's "Daily Reason to Dispatch Bush")
