Louisiana: Judge Removed From Jena Six Case

The judge overseeing the criminal cases for the five remaining defendants in the Jena Six case was removed against his will over his remarks about the teenagers. The judge, J. P. Mauffray Jr., had acknowledged calling the defendants “troublemakers” and a “violent bunch,” but he insisted he could be impartial. Defense lawyers disagreed and asked that he be removed. Another judge, Thomas M. Yeager, found that there was an appearance of impropriety.
