Coffee and an aspirin 'best hangover cure'
Here is another hangover reliever that claims to have a scientific basis.

Scientists have confirmed what millions of sore heads have suspected for years - the best cure for a hangover is not a fry up or a hair of the dog but an aspirin and a coffee.

Ethanol brings on headaches thanks to a chemical acetate it can produce and even low doses can affect some people more than others, said the Harvard study.

He then gave them doses of caffeine and anti-inflammatories to find it blocked the acetate and relieved the headaches. Oshinsky told the journal New Scientist 'none of the commonly cited causes of hangovers could have caused this response.'

The rats were not dehydrated either, going against an argument that coffee should not be used as a hangover cure because it just causes further dehydration.

If you can't control the rate and amount of ingestion, then at least slow it down with water throughout the night. Take the aspirin BEFORE you go to bed (assuming you haven't imbibed to nausea).

Aspirin and coffee in the morning followed by a high protein, high fat meal (omelettes or greasy hamburgers fit the bill)because the alcohol leaves many hypoglycemic with a major case of the shakes--replacement of fluids (water) throughout the day, followed shortly thereafter by some really healthy veggies, like steamed broccoli.

I've always wondered how chronic alcoholics can do it, because a single night's real overindulgent episode wreaks so much havoc on the body that it can sometimes take two days or more just to get over its lasting effects.

Those in medicine are aware of some more immediate solutions, but for OTC remedies this works. OR, of course you can just not drink so much to begin with....

4. A multivitamin and 600 milligrams of ibuprofen taken
before I go to sleep always worked for me. Fortunately I don't get that way often anymore.

5. Coffee + Aspirin = Anacin
if you take the Aspirin (3 of them) BEFORE you fall asleep drunk, you won't wake up with a headache. you may still be drunk, but your head won't hurt.

the key, of course, is to not so drunk that you can't remember to take the aspirin.

6. When in college I occasionally overindulged and made it a habit,
no matter how unsteady on my feet I might be (lol), before I went to bed I took 3 aspirin and drank a whole glass of water. Then coffee in the AM. Only ever had 2 hangovers in 8 years, 2 New Year's in a row.

Haven't drank like that in decades, but in college it was the thing to do.

7. +1
In college, I used to be laid low the day after overindulging every time--till I discovered that rehydrating myself (with just one glass of water) before I went to bed worked miracles. I never included aspirin, but then again, my hangovers never took the form of headaches--just debilitating nausea (what I eventually recognized as dehydration). :hi:

8. Two aspirin and two vitamins before going to bed always worked
for me (when I was sober enough to remember to take them).

Not drinking alcohol at all for the last twenty-four years has worked even better, yes.
