California officials - vaccine status in babies and todders is not an issue in Pertussis outbreak.

Interesting information from the latest CDC data on vaccine coverage in the US -

U.S. immunization rates for the most common childhood vaccines continue to remain near or above the target level of 90% coverage, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. Rates for the newest vaccines, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B and rotavirus, also continue to grow, the agency reported in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Less than 1% of children had not received any vaccines.

"Today's report is generally very reassuring, despite *reports we have seen" about parents being reluctant to immunize children because of fears of a link between vaccines and autism." ...

The two major exceptions to the trend of increases involve the measles vaccine and that for Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib), which causes meningitis. The latter problem was caused by a shortage of the vaccine during 2008 and 2009 that led the CDC to recommend that physicians not give a fourth (booster) dose of the vaccine to children until the supply problem was resolved.

... In fact, some vaccines are seeing increased coverage levels ...

The new findings came from the 2009 National Immunization Survey, which conducted telephone interviews with households containing 17,313 children and collected pediatricians' records on their vaccination history.

Among the findings:

-- Coverage for the hepatitis A vaccine increased from 40.4% in 2008 to 46.6% in 2009.

-- Coverage for the hepatitis B vaccine given at birth increased from 55.3% to 60.8%.

... Perhaps most importantly, unbiased information on the recent California outbreak reveals that parental refusal is not an issue, however, waning immunity is.

Schuchat briefly addressed the pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak in California, which has so far killed nine infants. We don't think it is the coverage level in babies and toddlers that is the problem, but the lack of vaccination in adults and teens."

and it is the fault of the adults ( what ages..??) and teens who did not get vaccinated that pertussis is going around?

Hmmm.

8. I still cannot understand why infants at birth need Hep B. shots.
those working around blood diseases, perhaps.

I do not understand why infants and toddlers whose system is still being developed "need" all their shots at one time.

I am old. My 'children" are in their forties.
but, if I had to do it all over again, I would not allow so many vaccinations at such a young age.
Esp. now that pharmaceutical companies have been allowed blanket indemnity for any damages stemming from vaccinations.

9. You'll hear all sorts of rationale
for that one. I'm with you, however. What's interesting is that many more parents opt out of the HepB vaccine, than the polio vaccine. So, some parents are selectively vaccinating. People use the numbers of parents opting out of say HepB to promote the false notion that 30% of parents are not vaccinating, but that's very misleading considering more than 90% vaccinate against polio. Hope that made some sense. :hi:

69. The first article about differing efficacy is based upon specuation which has been refuted.
Edited on Tue Sep-21-10 11:42 AM by mzmolly
Christopher Wanjek recently wrote an article outlining a recent trend with respect to whooping cough. The trend is disturbing: the anti vaccination movement is having an effect on the number of whooping cough cases in the United States... they are increasing. And people are suffering for no logical reason. It's so bad, in fact, that in the state of California, they have declared a whooping cough epidemic.

Once again, your source is speculating and he is wrong. 93-94% of California infants and toddlers have been vaccinated against pertussis in California. http://www2a.cdc.gov/nip/coverage/nis/nis_iap2.asp?fmt=v&rpt=tab08_19mo_iap&qtr=Q1/2009-Q4/2009 The issue is adults and teens which have not been adequately targeted by health officials given the newness of the booster recommendation. People like you don't help reach the right people, when you spread misinformation. You're doing harm to your stated cause.

7. Dr. Anne Schuchat is an official from the CDC. I should have said Health officials
vs. California officials in my OP title.

http://www.cdc.gov/about/leadership/leaders/schuchat.htm

"Nearly all parents are choosing to have their children protected against dangerous childhood diseases through vaccination," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Director of the National Center for Immunication and Respiratory Diseases at CDC.

13. So if kids who were vaccinated
ate still getting whooping cough, why isn't someone questioning the efficacy of the vaccination, rather than blindly blaming unvaccinated teens and adults? I'm sensing a certain disconnect.

I also recall reading a couple of decades ago that in a similar outbreak (not sure which disease anymore, but I kind of think it was pertussis) vaccinated children came down with whatever it was at higher rates than the much smaller group of unvaccinated children. Isn't that interesting?

18. You won't get a straight answer on this page.
The anti-vax crowd made political moves to have the more viable vaccine taken off the market, despite the fact that research proved it safe. The anti-vaxers don't want to discuss this part of the equation. What's even more hilarious is that they are now running at mouth to divert attention from their own advocacy, which might lead to much worse outbreaks. The hypocrisy is astounding.

"I've posted recent links regarding the efficacy issue. You ran away from them."

I've not run away from anything. If you have scientific data about differing efficacy, post it. If it's a 'story' from bloggers with an agenda, save it.

Here's a clue for you on the efficacy matter. Natural immunity from pertussis lasts for decades. When we replaced that, with vaccine induced immunity, we were booster bound. It's not rocket science.

34. Even those who agree with you have tried to tell you that the so called
anti-vaccination movement hasn't had an impact on overall vaccination rates. You may find biased, skewed articles that support your preconceived notions, but the CDC data is crystal clear. The "reality" is that Andrew Wakefield, Jenny McCarty, JFK Jr. and Bill Maher, have had NO impact on vaccine coverage levels in the United States.

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/PDF/rr/rr4607.pdf

"The efficacy of three doses of acellular pertussis vaccines in preventing moderate to severe pertussis disease was within the range expected for most whole-cell DTP vaccines."

It's not 'anti vaccine' to discuss vaccination with honesty and openness. It's not 'anti vaccine' to point out that the rhetoric from industry and their counterparts is often false. It's not 'anti vaccine' to recognize the fact that some children and adults are harmed from vaccinations. It's not 'anti vaccine' to advocate for safer vaccines like the acellular pertussis vaccine which (like regulation) establishes greater confidence in vaccination. I will not be silenced by you. I will not be defined by you.

As Paul Wellstone used to say we have plenty of voices for industry, we need more for average citizens. I'll never stop advocating for the average person, who may be the exception to the rule when it comes to vaccination.
