Good Sources of Vitamin D
Some sanity re: Vitamin D from Drs. Oz and Roizen at the Real Age website:

Recommended Amount: How Much You Need
There's mounting evidence to support a bump in the daily dose of vitamin D. While the government recommendations are 400 international units (IU) per day if you're under 70 years of age and 600 IU if you're over 70, several members of the RealAge Scientific Advisory Board now recommend taking 1,000 IU of vitamin D if you're under 60 years of age and 1,200 IU if you're over 60. The daily upper intake level for D is 2,000 IU a day -- so anything up to that is generally considered safe.

Caveats:

If you get enough sunlight every day, about 20 minutes in the middle of the day most days then you are covered according to them.
They are talking about DIY vitamins, not the megadoses you get with a prescription. That is outside the scope of the article.

2. Then that's the thing to do obviously
This article is addressing people who want to raise their supplementation levels on their own and don't have the advice of an MD to go on.

6. I started taking 2000 IU/day
and my blood pressure went through the roof. I stopped and it normalized. Now I take around 400 IU and it seems fine. Just be careful.

7. It's become an epidemic
so a doctor told me; too much use of sun block for one. I was in terrible pain for years finally I couldn't stop trembling (used to go away when I ate, but then even that alleviation stopped) even my voice was shaking -- well under 50 I was shaking & sounding like Kate Hepburn at the end of her life

Finally a Physicians Assistant (more knowledgeable than any doctor I've ever had) ordered the right bloodwork: my Vitamin D level came in at 9, normal is about 50.

I'm in my last week of 50,000 IU's Vit D/each week (and minimum 20 minutes in the sun every day, tough to do when you have agoraphobia) -- it took 3 weeks but trembling is now permanently gone (I could even go, last night, & shoot pool again! Won 2 out of 3 games) I haven't had a single back spasm which I've been treated for over a decade with codeine & powerful muscle relaxants, my other pain is gone... it's like a miracle.

The only concern: Vitamin D is a fat, not water, soluble substance so you still have to be careful also about not taking too much; be on the lookout for nausea, weight loss & irritability.
