C-PAP machine on an airline flight? Anyone with experience with this?
I flew a few weeks back and didn't use my machine while in flight even though i napped. I really felt groggy as a result. I'm going to be taking several overnight flights in the near future. I can get a battery pack for the unit. My question is whether you had any problems from airline staff about using the machine in-flight?

1. There shouldn't be a huge problem.
The only problem I can see is stowing it for takeoff and landing and if there is turbulence during the flight. Other than that, there shouldn't be a problem for any medically necessary device.

A note from your doc can help them see reason.

2. Best to call the airline and ask but
it is a medical aide so there should not be a problem as long as you are permitted to carry it on the plane.

Here is a site with some info:

"Using CPAP on the Plane
You are allowed to use a CPAP aboard a plane, since it is a medical device. You will need to be seated in first class or business class to have access to a power outlet called an EmPower outlet. Bring an adapter with your CPAP machine that allows you to run it on the plane.
Complaints
A flight crew cannot refuse to let you use your CPAP machine or make it difficult to do so. You can file a complaint with the Department of Transportation if you experience with such problems. The e-mail address is airconsumer@ost.dot.gov. The mailing address is: Aviation Consumer Protection Division U.S. Department of Transportation Room 4107, C-75 Washington, DC 20590."

4. I suspect that rule may apply to US air carriers only, but it's good to know.

6. It looks like the CPAP machines are in regulatory hell-
they can be used provided the manufacturer gets the FAA label. I don't think any manufacturer has thought that far ahead.
