Separating myth from fact in debate about flu vaccine

"So did you hear? You can protect yourself from swine flu by putting bowls of cut-up onions in every room of your house.

No really, it's true, I read it on the Internet, on the same website that had the skinny on the giant albino alligators that live in New York city sewers, a scandal that the government has tried to suppress for years.

Both of these stories are, of course, urban myths, which are usually just harmless fun.

But there are some persistent myths circulating widely about the H1N1 vaccine now becoming available that may persuade people not to take it, a decision that could lead to a lot of needless misery, hospitalizations and even deaths.

These myths are all based on the false notion that the vaccine is more dangerous than the flu, especially for otherwise healthy people.

Here are the main ones making the rounds.

6. I heard that you can avoid swine flu by not bathing for weeks ...
since you won't have any human contact (nobody would want to get near you), you won't catch it from ANYBODY ...
