Washington -- Swine flu has sickened about 22 million Americans since April and killed nearly 4,000, including 540 children, according to U.S. estimates released Thursday.

The figures -- roughly a quadrupling of previous death estimates -- don't mean swine flu suddenly has worsened, and most cases still don't require a doctor's care. Instead, the numbers are a long-awaited better attempt to quantify the new flu's true toll.

"I am expecting all of these numbers, unfortunately, to continue to rise," said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We have a long flu season ahead of us."

And tight supplies of vaccine to combat the illness continue: Not quite 42 million doses are currently available, a few million less than CDC had predicted last week.

2. About 7%
Edited on Sun Nov-15-09 10:16 AM by MercutioATC
330M people in the U.S., 22M sick. Less than 7%.

This is only the second wave. They're predicting 40%-60% of the population to catch it.

12. CBS News Repport Says 95% of thise who thought they has H1N1 - DON'T ?? !
A recent CBS news report forced various states to hand over their actual infection rate statistics. The results were surprising. An average of 95% of all those who were diagnosed with Swine Flu - only had regular seasonal flu instead. It takes a special test from the CDC to determine if H1N1 is present - that test was only done on certain people . The CDC refused to hand over the statistics so CBS got the results from all 50 states individually - the results were surprising:

You can read about it here:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/21/cbsnews_investigates/main5404829.shtml

While we waited for CDC to provide the data, which it eventually did, we asked all 50 states for their statistics on state lab-confirmed H1N1 prior to the halt of individual testing and counting in July. The results reveal a pattern that surprised a number of health care professionals we consulted. The vast majority of cases were negative for H1N1 as well as seasonal flu, despite the fact that many states were specifically testing patients deemed to be most likely to have H1N1 flu, based on symptoms and risk factors, such as travel to Mexico.

3. I work in a public school pre-k
Five kids in our class got the vaccine and every single one got sick from it. One boy was so sick he was out of school for a week.

5. The vaccine doesn't make anyone "sick"
In your instance, these children had probably already been exposed to H1N1 and the vaccine was too late. Or, they were one of the 10-15% who get headaches as a small side effect of the vaccine. It also causes slight fevers in an even smaller percentage of recipients: http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/features/is-the-h1n1-swine-flu-vaccine-safe

8. Exactly! Those kids were faking.
All vaccines have serious health risks but "sickness" isn't one of them.

11. The suggestion isn't that they were faking, but that they might already have been coming down with
the flu.

6. What really bad luck
It's likely they had been infected prior to the vaccine and just got the shot a little too late.

10. The vaccine DID NOT cause their illness
The vaccine takes 2 weeks before it's fully working.

They were exposed to the virus either earlier or within the 2 week period after receiving the vaccine.

Are you a teacher?

14. 4,000 Deaths from the H1N1 Virus versus 25 from GBS
Edited on Sun Nov-15-09 04:37 PM by BeatleBoot
Go figure.

And the 25 Deaths from GBS can't even be attributed to the H1N1 vaccine.

But, please, by all means, ignore the vaccine, and feel free to spread it to those that are at risk.

You'll survive, but those you spread it to might not be.

Me, I was smart enough to get innoculated.

But, then again, I get it.

That whatever the figures really are (and I;m not taking yours to be necessarily true) that it IS possible and HAS happened that you can get immediately seriously ill from this vaccination . I was responding to your statement that it can not happen.

It can and it has.
Two posts above you said that it can not happen and you were wrong so I am not taking your new revised "figures" as gospel either.

19. Fear Mongering?

Give me a break.

Those that are fear mongering are those against the vaccine.

The numbers aren't there for those stating the vaccine is bad for you.

But enjoy to wallow in the ignorance.

Your choice.

Not mine.

20. From the CDC...
From the Center for Disease Control:

http://www.cdc.gov/FLU/about/qa/gbs.htm

<snip>

"In 1976, vaccination with the swine flu vaccine was associated with getting GBS. Several studies have been done to evaluate if other flu vaccines since 1976 were associated with GBS. Only one of the studies showed an association. That study suggested that one person out of 1 million vaccinated persons may be at risk of GBS associated with the vaccine."

====

Personally, I understand that I'm not that special to be considered 1 out of 1 million.

So I got vaccinated for H1N1 last Saturday since I have Asthma and my Doctor demanded it.

Since the vaccination, I have noticed one thing though.

I am increasingly unhappy with the Detroit Lions offensive line play.

Jeff Backus must go!!!

because they didn't get vaccinated.

It's more about being a vehicle to spread the virus than survival.

I don't understand what people don't get about that.

22. "Sharks attack, Sheriff Brody"
So its okay to spread a virus even if it...

- kills another 1,000 or so children

- kills thousands of adults

- it causes millions of dollars in lost productivity to the economy

Wait a minute.

You're the Mayor of Amity in the movie Jaws, aren't you?

Whatever saves a buck, Mr. Mayor.

Keep the children swimming in the ocean, Mr. Mayor.

7. My daughter's doctor's office will have the vaccine available tomorrow
and this is only the second batch they have gotten. There is a long waiting list; we are lucky she is on the list for this batch and yes, she may already be exposed to it. There are two neighbors with it and lots of kids have already had it.
