Researchers Say Healthy Diet Protects Against Depression In Middle Age
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/169489.php

"A new study led by researchers in the UK found that an overall healthy "whole food" diet comprising a high proportion of fruits, vegetables and fish, protected middle aged people against depression compared to a processed food diet containing a high proportion of high fat dairy food, processed meat, fried food, refined grains and sugar-laden desserts.

The study was the work of researchers based at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London (UCL), UK and the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), University of Montpellier, France, and is published in the November issue of the The British Journal of Psychiatry which is available online.

In their background information the authors explained that much research on diet and depression tends to focus on individual nutrients so they thought they would look at links between overall dietary patterns and depression.

Good research. And please no "it's just common sense" responses. Anyone who understands science knows better than that.

1. Help me out
Now if we grew our larger brains due to eating meat. Aren't we blowing our brains out by too much fruit and vegetables? With our IQs on the decline it makes me wonder. Is there someone around here that explain that to me?

4. Mmmm, I don't think so, no.
The last I saw, the current discussion moved from meat growing our brain to our brain growing via evolution, and ancestors started eating meat for a higher level of protein to support that growth.

If eating meat led to a bigger brain, one could argue that the alligator (which has been around for 200 million or something years) would be our overlord species.

3. Maybe people who aren't depressed tend to eat better/take better care of themselves?
What came first the chicken or the egg?

This DOES reek on 'junk science'....but, hey, whatever gets people to eat better/wiser....I'm all for it. Lying though to get that result just ....no, ....NO....the research should NOT have to lie. LYING is "the worst".

6. I agree
While I mostly followed a healthy diet, I have stepped it up a bit, and avoid sugar like the plague, and have cut way down on grains, cereals, and totally avoid dairy. My eyesight has improved a great deal!

The meat mentioned in the list is PROCESSED MEAT.

There is nothing wrong with chicken, turkey and GRASS-FED beef in moderation.
