Obama Health Plan To Cover 12 Million Illegals - Latest From the Wingnuts

Tell Congress No Health Insurance for Illegal Aliens

FaxDC.com wants to send this urgent and personalized Blast Fax message to all 535 members of the House and Senate for YOU.

Alert: Democrats moved one step closer to giving free health insurance to the nation's estimated 12 million illegal aliens when they successfully defeated a Republican-backed amendment, offered by Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., that would have prevented illegal aliens from receiving government-subsidized health care under the proposed plan backed by House Democrats and President Barack Obama.

2. I heard a wingnut on C-SPAN today saying that the illegal aliens had destroyed
our health care system. If I had been the host receiving that phone call, I would have asked him if he thought the insurance industry were illegal aliens because they have in fact been proven to be the main cause of our health care system being in such bad shape. Honestly, scapegoats season has began in earnest.

3. We are already providing health care for illegal aliens.
Legislation was passed in 2003 to take money out of Medicare for this purpose. [link:www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7795429/|Here is a 2005 article that tells about it. So the bill currently being considered doesn’t create a new health care benefit for illegals, it is just incorporating a policy carried over from the Bush administration.

5. Unconstitutional to do otherwise
Prop 187 in California tried to do just that - exclude illegals from all Government services. It was ruled Unconstitutional in less then 30 days

6. Do you let illegals die? I know hospitals in NYC can easily spend 1 million
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 06:56 PM by stray cat
on a cancer patient that is an illegal. Even if the person is on medicare as in NY the hospital only gets reimbursed about 10%. In 2004 health care per person in the US was 6300 per year. I'm sure it has increased since then. If it is around $8000 per year now - what percentage of your income would you have to pay in taxes for health care? Of course, someone making minimum wage can't afford to pay an extra $8000 in taxes for health care - so that burden has to fall on taxpayers as well. We really do need cost savings plans in place - part of that is what to do about illegals but also when to take people off ventilators even against the wish of family.

7. actually it's in the billl

Since the “journalists” haven’t read the 1,000 plus page long Health Care bill you may not know about the following atrocities in the Bill:

PG 50 Section 152- HC will be provided to ALL non-US citizens, illegal or otherwise.

Pg 59 lines 21-24- Govt will have direct access to your bank accounts for electronic funds transfer

•HR 3200 IH : line 18
An explanation by the practitioner of the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice, and benefits for such services and supports that are available under this title.

PGs 525-620 deals with the Govt basically taking over nursing homes,long-term care facilities (think assisted living) through regulations of the facilities, the owners of sd facilities, the employees of sd facilities and even the land owners of that sd facilities reside on. Additionally as you read these 90+ pages you can come to the conclusion that any Health related svcs will be determined and rationed by the Govt for our senior citizens and others in nursing homes. Continue reading to learn about the racial preferences mandated by the bill.

The Democrats’ health care bill creates a very significant financial incentive for medical schools and other entities to lower admission standards for “individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups” if that is what it takes to have the winning “demonstrated record”.

On page 879-880, the bill states that the Secretary of Health and Human Services:

“shall make grants to, or enter into contracts with, eligible entities . . . to operate a professional training program in the field of family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or geriatrics, to provide financial assistance and traineeships and fellowships to those students, interns, residents or physicians who plan to work in or teach in the field of family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or geriatrics.”

On page 881-882 the bill states:

“In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . Training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.”

On page 883 the bill states:
“The Secretary shall make grants to, or enter into contracts with, eligible entities . . . to operate or participate in an established primary care residency training program, which may include-(A) planning and developing curricula; (B) recruitment and training of residents; and (C) retention of faculty.”

On page 884-885 the bill states:

“In awarding grants and contracts . . . the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of training . . . individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds . . . .”

On page 887-889 the bill states that the

“Secretary shall make grants to, or enter into contracts with, eligible entities . . . to operate a professional training program for oral health professionals, to provide financial assistance and traineeships and fellowships to those professionals who plan to work in or teach general, pediatric, or public health dentistry, or dental hygiene, to establish, maintain, or improve academic administrative units (including departments, divisions, or other appropriate units) in the specialties of general, pediatric, or public health dentistry, to operate a loan repayment program for full-time faculty in a program of general, pediatric, or public health dentistry.”

On page 889-890 the bill states:

“In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . Training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.”

On page 908-909 the bill states: “The Secretary shall award grants and contracts to eligible entities” to do the same things for the field of public health as the Secretary can do for dentistry.

On page 909 the bill states:

“In awarding grants or contracts under this section, the Secretary shall give preference to entities that have a demonstrated record of the following: . . . Training individuals who are from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.”

8. And yet, that is something that Canada's system would do.
In Canada, in order to enroll in a province's health insurance system, the first thing you must do is prove your eligibility.
That means presenting proof that you're either a Canadian citizen or that you're a non-citizen who holds a permanent resident visa.
You also have to prove that you're a resident of that province.

Some provinces may also offer coverage to people who are there on a work permit, but they're not required to, and they
definitely do not cover illegal immigrants (while they don't have as large an illegal problem - it's not non-existent either).

12. the whole entire question of undocumented immigrants

is one where it is best not to try comparisons between Canada and the US, in any regard, not just the current health care debate.

The phenomenon in the US has very long roots in history, and it's a history that doesn't apply to Canada. Now, had Canada formed a country and excluded Quebec, which was at the time a very much less-developed, agrarian society to a large extent, speaking a minority language, and with no significant ties left to a mother country imperial power in Europe, we might have ended up with a similar situation. English and French Canada were in fact politically tied, externally, to the same imperial power at the time, but the vast domestic cultural and economic gulf remained, and without confederation, things could have turned out very different.

We didn't go our separate ways. A century later than when the US did its thing, we negotiated autonomy and formed a negotiated union that encompassed the differences and allowed room and rights for them, and meant that eventually development was equalized to a large extent across the territory.

That's a whole nother thing from the historic relations between the US and Mexico or Central America generally, and the pattern of development in the region.

It's an area where I would not consider offering advice based on my/our experience here! The fact that undocumented immigrants in Canada are highly unlikely to be turned away from a hospital or unable to find necessary primary medical care one way or another (even the fact that payment out of pocket for such services would be a fraction of what it would be in the US would have to be considered) isn't particularly relevant to the discussion in the US.

10. Maybe only Democrats should be covered for health?
All Republican voters have to pay for health up front no insurance for them either.

See how the Republicans would like that!
