Adults with less than six hours of nightly sleep were at highest risk of death
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 09:41 PM by steven johnson
A lot of people brag about how little sleep they get by on. They may be doing themselves more harm than good.

ScienceDaily (June 9, 2009) — Men with insomnia and sleep duration of six or fewer hours of nightly sleep are at an increased risk for mortality, according to a research abstract that will be presented on June 8, at Sleep 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

Results indicate that compared to people who sleep six hours or more, men with insomnia and less than six hours of nightly sleep were at highest risk of mortality. The mortality rate of the sample was 19.6 percent for men versus 10.3 percent for women.

The study included data from 1,741 men and women who were randomly selected from Central Pennsylvania. Participants were studied in a sleep laboratory; follow-ups were conducted over the course of 14 years for men and 10 years for women. Insomnia was defined by a complaint of insomnia with duration of greater than a year, while "poor sleep" was defined as a complaint of difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or early final awakening.

Polysomnographic sleep duration was classified into two categories; people who slept greater than six hours, and those who slept for less than six hours.

6. Wow...
Years back they asked Terrell Davis, legendary running back for the Denver Broncos and Super Bowl XXXII MVP what his hobby was.
He replied...
"Sleeping".

My schedule permits me to sleep as many hours as I like and more often than not, it's at least eight hours.
Ten, if I can get it.

I love to sleep.

I ain't going nowhere.

8. I'm with you. 8.5 to 9.5 every night. And I like to wake up slooowly and have a leisurely morning
sipping a cup of tea and checking out the veggie garden.

9. My thoughts exactly.
My understanding is if we're breathing, we're at risk of death. In fact I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it's a certainty. }(

10. Sleep to little, you die

Sleep to much, you die.

I guess I have to get 8 hrs 01 minutes and 51 seconds of sleep tonight. Better set my alarm!

But is it 01 minutes and 51 seconds too long?!?!?!?
