Chocolate milk
After a grueling workout, most parched athletes want two things: rest and a beverage. The prime pick tends to be regular old water, over sports drinks or flavored water varieties.
But water isn't the only thing lost during a workout.
The body also burns up fat, protein and carbohydrates during physical activity. Research shows drinks other than water can help your body recover more efficiently.
What to drink?
During exercise, fat is burned up first, up to about 50 percent of an athlete's maximum effort. After that, the body burns more carbohydrate and less fat as the athlete works harder, says Scott Sehnert, coordinator of the division of sports and cardiovascular nutrition at Michigan State University.
After exercise, the body goes into recovery mode, replacing fluids and rebuilding glycogen in the muscles. Glycogen, or stored glucose, is the main source of power for energy, says Nick Vanbogelen, a performance coach with Optimal Performance Specialists, 206 Page Ave.
