More on broccoli vs breast cancer, or rather more information
on how broccoli inhibits the cancer process. As a supplement, Indole 3 Carbinol, an extract of cabbage and or broccoli could be considered for a person facing the worst.

http://www.lef.org/whatshot/2008_12.htm#How-broccoli-works-against-breast-cancer

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have discovered a mechanism for indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a compound found in cruciferous vegetables, in combating breast cancer. The compound has been shown to halt the growth of breast and prostate cancer tumors in mice, and has been associated with the reduction of some types of cancer among individuals who include vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts in their diet.

In a study summarized online early in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, University of California Berkeley professor molecular and cell biology Gary Firestone and colleagues demonstrated that I3C inhibits elastase, an enzyme that shortens a compound known as cyclin E, which, in turn, accelerates cancer cell proliferation. Increased elastase levels have been associated with decreased chemotherapy and endocrine therapy response, and lowered survival rates.

In earlier research conducted by the team, it was found that I3C disrupts the migration of cancer cells.

"We have connected the dots on one extremely important pathway" Dr Firestone announced. "I think one of the real uses of this compound and its derivatives is combining it with other kinds of therapies, such as tamoxifen for breast cancer and antiandrogens for prostate cancer. Humans have co-evolved with cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, so this natural source has a lot fewer side effects."

It's just that broccoli and brussels sprouts
are the most repulsive worst tasting vegetables
on the planet, along with beets... and they're
all so good for you.

Hell, smother it with cheese, you'll still get most of the health benefits. But beets...barf. I'm with you there.

5. Usually that means that they're overcooked.
Try lightly cooking them in some olive oil, ginger, and garlic. Add a little soy sauce at the end.

7. Maybe you're using bad recipes
Brussels sprouts have a very fine line between delicious and disgustingly over cooked, and broccoli is similar. I've roasted beets in the oven, sliced them, and then cooked them in a pan with OJ. The original recipe also called for a lot of brown sugar which I reduced to about 1 TBSP for 4 beets. Add cornstarch/water at the end to thicken and yum! You could probably use a different thickener like arrowroot instead.

Indole 3 Carbinol I3C by Ray Sahelian, M.D. Health benefit of INdole 3 carbinol supplement

Indole-3-carbinol is found in cabbage, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. Indole-3-carbinol is converted in the gut to diindolylmethane (DIM). When an indole 3 carbinol supplement is ingested, there is little or no indole 3 carbinol found in the bloodstream. The substance that is found in the bloodstream after taking an indole 3 carbinol supplement is DIM.

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C), 200 mg ( With Flax Lignans ), 60 Vcaps
Indole-3-Carbinol ( I3C ) is a naturally occurring phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, and kale. NOW I3C provides powerful antioxidant protection, helping to prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals. In addition I3C can help to maintain healthy hormonal balance for both men and women and therefore may support the health of the breast, prostate, and other reproductive organs. I3C is also known to support the liver's detoxification processes as well as normal cellular reproduction. LinumLife provides the highest level of Flax Lignans available, which are also beneficial in supporting healthy hormonal balance.*

6. Not only cancer. I was examined for osteoporosis 3 years ago. I had beginnings of it. Then I
started eating A LOT of broccoli, cabbage, and beets I found recipes on the web that made them taste really good. I eat a lot of cheese and a good calcium supplement with magnesium. I had another examination this year, and my bones are terrific. And I did not have to take those dangerous bone medicines that are advertised on TV.

16. Your body leaches calcium out of your body
if your diet is to acidic - to neutralize the acid.

So an added benefit of vegetables (most) is that they are alkaline, meaning that the Ca in one's bones is not leached out. (Same thing happens with soda - the phosphoric acid causes Ca to be leached from bones.)

19. Acid base balance in the body is controlled by the kidneys
and to a lesser extent by the lungs. Eating a high acid diet will acidify your urine but nothing else.

The people pushing that dietary acid/alkaline stuff are quacks.

25. Hydrogen ions
With what chemicals do the kidneys balance your ph?

The kidneys secrete more or less hydrogen ions to keep the blood ph level. The hydrogen ions combine with ammonia to form ammonium ions and it all eventually winds up in your toilet.

It requires way more chemistry knowledge than I have, but I think the kidney produces hydrogen ions as a byproduct of producing carbon dioxide from bicarbonate.

If you ever changed your blood pH significantly, you would die.

39. You're a chemist?
You're a chemist? And you have to ask where the hydrogen ions come from in a water based solution?

You're a chemist? And you don't know what happens when you mix CO2 and H2O in the blood stream?

That's high school chemistry stuff.

36. This is from a person who debunks the acid/alkaline theory
.............but look what he says about your bones. AHEM. AHEM.

Acid/Alkaline Theory of Disease Is Nonsense
Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Have you seen advertisements for products such as coral calcium or alkaline water that are supposed to neutralize acid in your bloodstream? Taking calcium or drinking alkaline water does not affect blood acidity. Anyone who tells you that certain foods or supplements make your stomach or blood acidic does not understand nutrition.

You should not believe that it matters whether foods are acidic or alkaline, because no foods change the acidity of anything in your body except your urine. Your stomach is so acidic that no food can change its acidity. Citrus fruits, vinegar, and vitamins such as ascorbic acid or folic acid do not change the acidity of your stomach or your bloodstream. An entire bottle of calcium pills or antacids would not change the acidity of your stomach for more than a few minutes.

..........

All chemical reactions in your body are started by chemicals called enzymes. For example, if you convert chemical A to chemical B and release energy, enzymes must start these reactions. All enzymes function in a very narrow range of acidity. (The degree of acidity or alkalinity is expressed as "pH."). If your blood changes its acidity or alkalinity for any reason, it is quickly changed back to the normal pH or these enzymes would not function and the necessary chemical reactions would not proceed in your body.

When you take in more protein than your body needs, your body cannot store it, so the excess amino acids are converted to organic acids that would acidify your blood. But your blood never becomes acidic because as soon as the proteins are converted to organic acids, calcium leaves your bones to neutralize the acid and prevent any change in pH. Because of this, many scientists think that taking in too much protein may weaken bones to cause osteoporosis.

............

EXACTLY what I said !!!!

18. This research is preliminary
and might lead to better treatment down the line, but eating a diet primarily of cabbages and their relatives after a diagnosis of breast cancer isn't going to improve your odds over no treatment at all.

I love the cabbages with the exception of Brussels Sprouts. If you love them and can tolerate them during radiation and chemotherapy, they're certainly not going to hurt you.

However, it's far too early to start thinking they're either prevention or cure.

Indole-3-carbinol as a chemopreventive and anti-cancer agent.
Weng JR, Tsai CH, Kulp SK, Chen CS.

Department of Biological Science and Technology, China Medical University, Taiwan.

During the course of oncogenesis and tumor progression, cancer cells constitutively upregulate signaling pathways relevant to cell proliferation and survival as a strategy to overcome genomic instability and acquire resistance phenotype to chemotherapeutic agents.

In light of this clinical and molecular heterogeneity of human cancers, it is desirable to concomitantly target these genetic abnormalities by using an agent with pleiotropic mode of action. Indole-3-carbinol and its metabolite 3,3'-diindoylmethane (DIM) target multiple aspects of cancer cell-cycle regulation and survival including Akt-NF kappa B signaling, caspase activation, cyclin-dependent kinase activities, estrogen metabolism, estrogen receptor signaling, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and BRCA gene expression.

This broad spectrum of anti-tumor activities in conjunction with low toxicity underscores the translational value of indole-3-carbinol and its metabolites in cancer prevention/therapy. Furthermore, novel anti-tumor agents with overlapping underlying mechanisms have emerged via structural optimization of indole-3-carbinol and DIM, which may provide considerable therapeutic advantages over the parental compounds with respect to chemical stability and anti-tumor potency. Together, these agents might foster new strategies for cancer prevention and therapy.

26. doctors
According to Dr. Simoncini’s website, polls and questionnaires show that a full 75 percent of doctors say they’d refuse chemotherapy if they were struck with cancer due to its ineffectiveness and its devastating side effects.

Many doctors have spoken out about it, yet their voices are still ignored. For example, Dr. Allen Levin, MD, author of The Healing of Cancer, has said, “The majority of the cancer patients in this country die because of chemotherapy, which does not cure breast, colon or lung cancer. This has been documented for over a decade and nevertheless doctors still utilize chemotherapy to fight these tumors.”

Professor Gorge Mathe similarly stated, “If I were to contract cancer, I would never turn to a certain standard for the therapy of this disease. Cancer patients who stay away from these centers have some chance to make it.”

So, how effective is chemotherapy?

There is at least one study that I know of that addresses this very question. Published in the journal Clinical Oncology in December 2004, the results of this study were astounding, showing that chemotherapy has an average 5-year survival success rate of just over 2 percent for all cancers!

32. Oh, please.
Type and size of tumor and patient age must be considered, but even in the elderly patient with the least aggressive form, the survival rate is 8% higher than with surgery alone.

Trusting diet to cure a life threatening disease like cancer is a loser's game. Good diet can help the patient survive the treatment better, but it's no good on its own.

Dying from breast cancer is a hideous way to go. Google "pathological fracture" to find out why.
