My SO survived the triple bypass. But he lost his vision during the surgery.

I did a google of cardiac surgery and loss of vision. The elements are there. After the surgery was concluded, low blood pressure because they couldn't stop bleeding (due to the blood thinners), low hemoglobin (he needed transfusions), he was hooked up to a cardiopulmonary machine, existing atrial fibrillation. Long story short: it appears that he had a stroke to the optic nerve, and it's likely a permanent condition.

His sister caught that he couldn't see the first day after the surgery, spoke to the anesthesiologist who didn't have a clue about this. But . . . yesterday, the second day after surgery, when his sister brought this up to the surgeon, he said he knew nothing about this loss of vision and it wasn't in his chart.

He can't see at all. Even his irises have a different color.

My SO survived but the future is so tentative. We're hoping to have a consultation with a neurologist and ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

3. You'd be amazed how many "likely permanent conditions" go away
My sister-in-law was supposedly never going to walk again but no one told her so she did. :)

Don't lose hope.

4. The surgeon didn't know because it wasn't in his record?
Hmmm. I'm glad his surgery is behind him, no hypocrisy, and am sorry for this additional damage he was caused. I hope the neurologist and opthamologist will be able to inform you better.

5. No, the surgeon read the chart and nothing at all about the vision was in it.
And the surgeon and anesthesiologist didn't catch it. Only his sister did by just talking to him.

I'll have an update as I get more information.

7. I'm so sorry. I also find it very strange that his sister discovred this
before the medical personnel. My husband had that same surgery 12 years ago, and I remember the attendants checking pupil dialation etc. when I first saw him after the surgery. Somebody at that hospital should have noticed your SO's problem!
