E. Coli Outbreak Spreads to Ninth State
By ANDREW BRIDGES, Associated Press Writer
2 hours ago

WASHINGTON - Federal health officials worked Friday to find the source of a multistate E. coli outbreak and warned consumers that even washing the suspect spinach won't kill the sometimes deadly bacteria.

One person died and dozens of others were sickened in the nine-state outbreak, linked by Food and Drug Administration officials to bagged spinach.

"We need to strive to do even better so even one life is not lost," said Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, FDA's acting commissioner.

The FDA warned people not to eat bagged spinach and said washing it wouldn't solve the problem because the bacteria is too tightly attached.

3. 10 states now
The outbreak has sickened others _ 10 of them seriously _ in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon and Utah. In California and Washington, health officials were investigating a single case in each of the two states.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

An exodus of key leaders and scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has raised "great concern" among five of the six former directors who led the agency over the past 40 years. Their concerns, expressed in a rare joint letter to current CDC Director Julie Gerberding, come amid growing staff complaints about whether her strategic shifts in the agency's focus are putting public health at risk, according to interviews with current and former CDC officials and documents obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Could this have anything to do with it or is it another symptom?

The last case of e. coli that hit me here in wisconsin was from alphalpha sprouts. So they are no longer on the shopping list.

10. My partner and I got sick
last week after eating at The Olive Garden. We're 99% sure it was from the salad. We both had diarrhea followed by nausea and extreme fatigue. It lasted less than two days. Was that too mild to be E Coli?

11. Symptoms can range from mild to severe
I don't envy what you went through.

I've encountered food poisoning twice although I'm not sure if it was e.coli or something else -- once from restaurant food and once while traveling in another country and eating food that was not stored properly. I was sick as a dog each time.
