Infertile women sing acupuncture's praises
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20110809/LIFE/308090026/Infertile-women-sing-acupuncture-s-praises?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CFRONTPAGE

Brooke Akin underwent three rounds of artificial insemination at $3,000 a pop. She took fertility drugs that made her feel moody. Yet, after three and a half years of trying, she still wasn’t pregnant.

Akin, 29, of Hermitage, says her doctor recommended that she undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF), which costs roughly $15,000. But after some initial skepticism, Akin decided to put modern medicine aside and try the ancient practice of acupuncture.

“I was pregnant by the third month. It was awesome,” says Akin, who gave birth to her son, Hudson, in October. “He’s my little acupuncture baby.”

.........................

Initially, she worried it would hurt, but she says the needles are so thin that she could barely feel it when 15 or so were inserted in her head, stomach, arms and legs. With the soft music and dim lighting, Akin says she found the experience to be pretty relaxing.

“It’s kind of like being in a spa,” Akin says, adding that afterward she felt a lot healthier than she did taking fertility drugs.

2. I am bewildered that people expend such resources to further
over-populate an already crowded world.

Seems to me that other uses could be found for these funds and energies.

8. My wife and I had been trying to conceive for nine months...
The ninth month proved to be very stressful for her at work, with long hours and little sleep.

Guess what? She got pregnant that month!

So, if you're having a hard time getting pregnant, just stress yourself out and get as little sleep as possible!

Right?

9. There's no scientific basis for these claims
This woman got the pregnant the old fashioned way - she had sex with her husband enough times that a sperm eventually fertilized an egg.

13. Silly! You know that two women who have sex can't get pregnant!
Kind of thought you knew better than that - guess you need another birds 'n' bees talk!

The Role of Anecdotes in Science-Based Medicine
http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/the-role-of-anecdotes-in-science-based-medicine/

How many times does the reality that anecdotes do not tell the full story need to be repeated before those who want to believe in something finally question those beliefs?
