19 Studies Link GMO Foods to Organ Disruption

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/04/27/19-studies-link-gmo-foods-to-organ-disruption.aspx

A new paper demonstrates that consuming genetically modified (GM) food leads to significant organ disruptions in rats and mice. Researchers reviewed data from 19 studies and found that parameters including blood and urine biochemistry and organ weights were significantly disrupted in the GM-fed animals.

The kidneys of males were the most affected, experiencing 43.5 percent of all the changes. The livers of females followed at more than 30 percent. Other organs may have been affected too, including the heart and spleen, and blood cells.

According to the Institute for Responsible Technology:

"The GM soybean and corn varieties used in the feeding trials 'constitute 83 percent of the commercialized GMOs' that are currently consumed by billions of people. While the findings may have serious ramifications for the human population, the authors demonstrate how a multitude of GMO-related health problems could easily pass undetected through the superficial and largely incompetent safety assessments that are used around the world."

Further, the biotechnology firm Monsanto is only an FDA approval away from its latest monstrosity -- soybeans that have been genetically modified to produce omega-3 fats. That FDA approval is expected this year.

1. Our "food" supply is nothing but a slow poison...
Edited on Wed Apr-27-11 02:11 PM by drokhole
...and people wonder why the enormous uptick in diseases (besides even obesity and diabetes). The food you eat affects even your mental disposition (check out the documentary Feed Your Head for a FANTASTIC take on the matter). Our bodies are food recycling machines. They evolved along with what nature had to offer, which is why they operate optimally on natural foods. And what you eat today is the raw material of your brain and body - cells, hair, neurons, blood, organs... What the fuck do we expect when we consume all these chemicals, additives, food dyes, emulsifiers, fructose heavy sugars, you fucking name it...

2. The BT protien in corn (which poisons insect pests) is foreign to the human digestive system.
Just sayin'.

4. Automatic unrec for using Mercola as a source.
But what are the 19 studies? They are referenced nowhere in the article. Irresponsible "journalism." Well, of course, that kind of goes with the territory at Mercola.

5. there are links that lead to the study itself
There is nothing at all irresponsible about the piece. I quickly followed links to the complete study. Try figuring it out! :eyes:

6. It's irresponsible because as usual with Mercola,
the focus is on the FEAR and MISINFORMATION rather than the facts.

90 days. Even the meta study's authors admit their results could be meaningless. Yet Mercola reports it breathlessly as PROOF that GMO is GONNA KILL US ALL ZOMGWTFBBQ!

7. here is the conclusion of the study
Conclusions
The 90-day-long tests are insufficient to evaluate chronic toxicity, and the signs highlighted in the kidneys and livers could be the onset of chronic diseases. However, no minimal length for the tests is yet obligatory for any of the GMOs cultivated on a large scale, and this is socially unacceptable in terms of consumer health protection. We are suggesting that the studies should be improved and prolonged, as well as being made compulsory, and that the sexual hormones should be assessed too, and moreover, reproductive and multigenerational studies ought to be conducted too.

I find this highly disturbing, in light of the fact that the USDA is now going to allow Monsanto, et al, to conduct their own toxicity tests. It is no accident that Michelle has an organic garden. She knows a lot more than the average person at the grocery store.

9. well that is why we need tests that last longer
to test this. The tests are insufficient, period.

Do you trust Monsanto to do this?

10. You're missing the point.
This study's authors claim 90 days is not enough to know.

Mercola announces with certainty.

Get it yet?

12. his short blurb was accurate
He never said the changes were certain and permanent, and he linked the study so people could read the whole thing if they were interested.

I don't really see the problem. They did find kidney damage and that is what he stated. It was really just a very quick summary and link for the people who wanted to know more about the subject.

More important is not Mercola or what he wrote about it, but the fact that there are tons of legitimate scientific questions being raised about GMO food, and we just put the foxes in charge of the henhouse. We are collectively nuts to allow this to happen. If Mercola brings up the potential problems with GMO food, with links to studies, then GREAT. The more people that focus on this issue, rather than the Royal Wedding, the better.

13. What's a little lie among friends, eh?
I guess if you've got no problem with it, it's A-OK. After all, it says what you WANT to believe so ergo it's true.

He didn't lie. Rather than writing a long piece, it linked to it for everyone to get details. There was no lie in it.

It's not a good sign.
