Laser acupuncture may help bedwetters: study
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/15/us-acupuncture-bedwetters-idUSTRE73E5HC20110415

Acupuncture using a laser beam might help young bedwetters break the nighttime habit, according to a new study from Turkey.

........................................

Using a low-power laser, about two-thirds of the kids received acupuncture therapy on traditional bladder points three times a week for 4 weeks. The other kids, used for comparison, got the same treatment but with a fake laser.

Fifteen days after completing the treatment, 40 percent of kids who got therapy with a real laser had stopped wetting the bed entirely, compared to 8 percent of those with fake laser treatment. After 6 months, rates of complete improvement were 54 percent versus 12 percent.

Also 6 months after the treatment, kids in the laser therapy group wet the bed less than twice a week on average, compared to three times a week in the fake-laser group.

2. Oh, I See --
Using a laser (or fake laser) was the only was to do a double-blind study. Very clever.

I know acupunture has an effect. It's obviously not what the traditional theory says, unless you believe in things like the triple burner. But if done properly it's absolutely wonderful.

3. it is probably
the best way to do the study "double blind" (since there really is no such thing as blinded acupuncture--that idea amuses me).

But some acupuncturists actually use laser acupuncture. Here is another example...........

10. so what would you call
Laser therapy applied to acupuncture points? Does it really bother you so much? It is a very descriptive name.

8. Isn't 40% worse than chance?
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 12:57 PM by laconicsax
It something works, shouldn't it work more than half of the time? Shouldn't children whose bedwetting is 'cured' not still wet the bed after treatment?

Edit: I forgot to add--the group receiving the 'fake laser' showed a reduction in bedwetting too. That's some therapy!

9. you gotta be kidding right?
Do you think a new cancer therapy has to have greater than 50% cure rate to be approved or used?
