Cholesterol 'does not predict stroke in women' (BBC)
High levels of cholesterol do not predict the risk of stroke in women, according to researchers in Denmark.

They did detect an increased risk in men, but only when cholesterol was at almost twice the average level.

The report in Annals of Neurology recommends using a different type of fat in the blood, non-fasting triglycerides, to measure the risk.

The Stroke Association said triglyceride tests needed to become routine to reduce the risk of stroke.

2. Thanks for this - so timely
for me. Seeing a Dr. about ^ cholesterol, waiting for lab work to return.

I'd like to go the least amount of drugs and a more natural approach. I've had ^ triglycerides since my late 20's and now elevated bp. Once the doc's get you on meds it's down hill from there. They just keep adding and adding. I've got a shoe box full. I want off this freaking Merry Go Round.

5. But what about the good cholesterol and the bad cholesterol?
Are we supposed to just forget about all that? Weren't we going to make all old people take statins a little while back?

6. I am aware that I have high cholesterol levels, but since
my overall health is excellent, I refuse to do anything about it. I am not convinced that the side effects of medication are a reasonable trade-off for a slightly elevated risk of whatever high cholesterol might have.

While modern medicine does have many truly good and wonderful and life-saving aspects to it, I'm of the "If it's not broke, don't fix it" mind set. And being the healthiest person I know strikes me as good enough.
