Friends. I have some sad news.
MaddieJoan has passed away. She died in her sleep on December 11, 2008.

I enjoyed her very much. I recognize that she was very, very pro-Hillary and that upset many, but she was a good, good person and I am very sorry that she is no longer with us.

Please join me in expressing our condolences to her family. And, if you care not to, please don't post in this thread.

RIP, MaddieJoan. I hope you are happy wherever you are now.

35. Terrible loss - we disagreed and I admired her point of view
She had the deft touch of snarking Obama supporters with an economy of words but was very inciteful and effective.

Here was my ode to Maddijoan's mastery of snark:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=5961302&mesg_id=5961779

If your going to get advice on snarking Obama supporters please go to Maddiejoan

this Ode to her records a past encounter:

Ode to a great snarker

pointed but not hostile

brief but penetrating

searing but not personal

relevent but not tedious

self mocking but not depressing

How I look forward to your snarks. And yet you never seem to snark my threads Maddiejoan, have I insulted you?

Your snarks smack leave a mark like the hand print on a pristine bottom during erotic foreplay.

They are always clever but not boastful.

You are the snarkmaster and I bow to your snarkiness.

When your candidate's tepid and dying campaign has experienced the last twinge of electro pulse through the nervous system and we have a formal presumptive nominee will your snarks be endangered will they be gone forever?

Will we be left only with the memory of the perfect snark?

Oh by the way nice snark

I will miss her fighting spirit and clever wit.

I already do.

132. Yep, she was the world heavyweight champion of Snark.
The Snarkinstein
The Snarkologist in Chief
The Grand Ayahtolla of Snark
Snarkzilla

She was the best.

I rarely agreed with her and often hated the stuff she wrote, but I respected her committment and her intellect.

And I just fucking loved her snark.

Goodnight, Maddiejoan, sleep well. I miss you.

40. Maddie Joan was my brother and my sister.
He was a person of vast talent. Illustrator, painter, voice actor, comedian.

As children, he created vast, rich worlds that we inhabited together when we played D&D back in the 70's.
He did the same in his art. A huge imagination, a sense of humor like no one else. He could always crack you up.
Deeply well read on many subjects, he could discuss almost any issue like an expert.
He influenced me in more ways than I could express here. As my older brother, he shaped me and I looked up to him.
We fought, as siblings do. We did not like each other terribly much at times and fought often, because, as siblings, we each had our role in the family and sometimes we never escape those... But this latest Obam/Hillary thing was just another spat. Over 40 years together and you can have those...

I am broken up terribly. I lost my father a few months ago as well.

I wish Maddie Joan Adam Blaustein safe passage to whatever destination there may or may not be in this Universe.

60. I'm so sorry for your losses, this must be a difficult time for you :-(
I did a google and just found out how talented your bro/sis was. I had no idea Maddie was the voices for several animes.

Blaustein was, until her death, the voice of Sartorius in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. She was also most known as the voices of Meowth in Pokémon (Episodes 29-Season 8) and Solomon Muto (Sugoroku Mutou) from Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. She was also Chef Kawasaki from Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, Dr. Kureha in One Piece and Arngrim, Lawfer and Lezard in Valkyrie Profile. She was also a comic book writer and artist, having worked for both Marvel Comics<1> and Milestone Comics, and an animation director. Most recently, she served as Creative Director for the recently cancelled Weekly World News.

She provided the voice of Margarete in the English language version of the PlayStation 2 game Shadow Hearts. Most notable is her great variety of voices. In Valkyrie Profile, for example, she was able to perform a very "tough", deep masculine voice (Arngrim), as well as a high-class one (Lawfer) and a suitable and somewhat androgynous voice of a mad scientist/sorcerer (Lezard Valeth). In Shadow Hearts, Margarete is voiced in a deep, feminine, and seductive style. During the 2004 Democratic Party primaries, she appeared as Sméagol on the Mike Malloy Show, announcing a satirical presidential bid.<2> She was also the most recent voice actor for E-123 Omega of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

On December 11, 2008, Maddie Blaustein died in her sleep after a short illness. She was 48.

Please be assured that her memory will live on.

This is so very sad, even if for a while I had some sharp words, I always admired her/his humor--even when it stung me.

What a shame I did not appreciate her talent when I had the cahnce to know her/him--but at least my son did.

114. I will miss her very much
Bonobo,

I knew Maddie from Second Life, as well as from DU. We talked a few times on the phone just this last year, comparing notes on people we both knew when I lived in New York City. Despite all those connections, we had never crossed paths in person and I looked forward to meeting her in person the next time I made it back to the city.

The news of her death has hit the virtual community very hard, and there are threads filled with posts by her friends and admirers. She was known for being passionately outspoken, wickedly funny and uncompromising in her values.

She is being mourned and celebrated. She will be missed by so many people.

What a terrible loss for all who knew and loved her - and, from what I just read on this thread, also for those who didn't know her. The best that any of us can hope for is to leave a marker for ourselves when we leave. She left a big one. I wish you peace and the solace of sweet memories.

ETA: Oh my God, I did "know" her. I just downloaded Malloy's show for the night, and I just heard him speak about her for a few minutes... he said she used to call in to the show as "Smeagle." I remember those calls, she had me cryin', I laughed so hard, way back when he was based in Chicago, when I first listened to him.

I'm so sorry.

159. My condolences to the family
Bonobo, I knew Maddie initially as "Kendra Bancroft" in Second Life.
We became good friends there, and on the related forums.
Maddie was a gem, and everyone whose life she touched was enriched by it.
A creative genius.

I know another person close to me, who posts here has linked you to tribute threads about Maddie on SL related boards, so you've seen how treasured she was by so many of us.
But, I felt the need to come here, and say something to you,to express my condolences to you and yours.

She will be sorely missed.

Like many of us, I sometimes disagreed with Maddie but always enjoyed reading her posts. She brought such wit, heart and intelligence to the board.

I'll join you in wishing her safe passage. And I'll add my own wishes for peace and comfort to you and your family.

207. Maddie was a wonderful woman. It was sad that she wasn't accepted for what she was by some who were
close to her. She was a lovely witty girl who will be greatly missed. But at least she is now in a better place and accepted for her true self. Rest in peace lovely ,Maddie.

208. i didn't know of MaddieJoan but...
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 10:10 PM by mt13
when i read this OP and the responses, i did a search on her. my kids grew up with Pokémon and i watched with them. Our FAVORITE character was Meowth. i emailed my college kid to let him know and told my high schooler too. i also listened to her call-in to the Mike Malloy Show as smeagle/golum. it was brilliant! she was quite a talented person.

i lost my brother, too young, just turned 45, too soon, in 1996, to AIDS. i know how terrible a loss that is. please know, there are those that understand. it is not easy, it is damn hard. even now, after 12 years, i will catch an expression on my younger son's face and see my brother there, and totally break down.

keep the good memories. let the differences fade. remember the love.

peace, Bonobo.

52. I'm so sad to hear about Maddie.
I enjoyed "talking" to her through this crazy board. A fellow Hillary supporter amid an ocean of Obamaphiles. We were in the minority and I admired how she always stood her ground with grace and humor.

I was just thinking about her this week and wondering why I hadn't seen her over here for a while.

I'm saddened by her loss and wish to convey to her family and friends my deepest condolences.

Maddie, rest in peace.

112. Only 48 Years Old...and look at her BIO from your links: "known as the voices of Meowth in Pokémon"
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 10:07 PM by KoKo01
Madeleine Joan Blaustein (commonly credited as Maddie Blaustein, formerly credited as Addie Blaustein and Adam Blaustein) (October 9, 1960 - December 11, 2008) was a transgender voice actress born in Long Island, New York, United States.

Video game localization coordinator and translator Jeremy Blaustein is her brother.

She was 48.<3>

91. MaddieJoan ripped into me one night on the Board in what
I thought was an entirely inappropriate way. We went back and forth until the thread got locked. After that I made a point of reading her posts. Her contributions gave me an entirely different prism through which to view the world. I had always prided myself on my liberal tolerance of the gay lifestyle. Reading her made me feel to a small degree the hurt, pain and anger created not just by ignorant fundies but also by smug bystanders in this human liberation battle like myself.
I am sorry that I never got the chance to tell MaddieJoan of the impact she had on my thinking. She left the board before my thought processes altered. But I thank her for her angry honesty. And I believe that she will be welcomed in heaven with open arms.

Seems she was much loved here though, and I thought her "Smeagol" character was great. Mike Malloy just gave her a "shout out" on the air tonight, and said something about dying in your sleep being an indication of a good life or words to that effect.

My condolences to her family and those of you who knew her a lot better than I did. :(

While I know her strong stance in the primary and post-primary upset many, you could tell the passion was from the heart and that she was a good person.

My condolences to her family and friends. We need more people like her in these times.

135. RIP sweet MaddieJoan
You made me feel alive and hopeful again in a time when I felt like I couldn't even breathe. Your kind words to me when I had been kicked hard by life made the difference in whether I let things get to me and depress me or I held my head up high and lived on knowing I have worth in this world. Not many people can do that with me. I'm not easy to reason with when I am like that. You did. I hope you knew how much that meant to me. Words cannot express the feeling of sadness and emptiness your passing will create in a not so great world. You will MOST DEFINITELY be missed.

I wish you were still here. I love you.

185. Rec # 96.
Everything reminds me.

At my kid's concert last night in Junior high, someone played the theme from the "Mission" by Morricone.

It was the story of 2 brothers, one killed by the other in a fight over a woman. The killer, Robert DeNiro, was stricken with grief, but with the intervention of the priest, Jeremy Irons, he found death and peace from his guilt. Such heart-rending music. I couldn't help but cry.

223. No problem. I understand the confusion and I see where you did refer to her as a she.
It is just that some close to her refused to accept her for what she was and it was so important to Maddie. One close to her even suggestted she was "mentally ill" and it was hurtful for her to be rejected in that way. I am sure you liked and respected Maddie as did many of us. I too will miss her.
