(New York City) A full page ad in today’s Salt Lake Tribune slams the Church of Latter Day Saints and other religious conservatives for accusing gays of “mob violence” over protests against Proposition 8.
The Mormon Church was one of the biggest financial contributors to the Prop 8 campaign which amended the California state constitution to ban same-sex marriage. After passage of the proposition last month LGBT groups have demonstrated at Mormon churches. There also have been acts of vandalism at some churches but police say they have found no evidence the vandals were connected to gay rights groups.
Last week the Washington-based Becket Fund for Religious Liberty took out a full page ad in the New York Times with the headline “No Mob Veto”, condemning any attacks on people of faith. It was signed by a number of Mormon and evangelical church leaders from across the country.
Today’s counter-ad was paid for by Truth Wins Out, the New York-based group that regularly fights what it sees as religious hypocrisy against gays. It chose The Tribune because Salt Lake City is the home of the Mormon Church.
