Tolerance-Preaching Fat Jack Black Jesus Angers Hateful Christian Group
What's a good sign you're getting under the skin of right-wing bigots? Well, a testily-worded press release from the Christian Anti-Defamation Coalition is usually a good sign you're doing something right. Responding to "Prop 8.: The Musical", the Funny or Die video all your straight friends keep sending you, the group writes of Jack Black's portrayal of a singing Jesus:

"Jack Black should remember from his days at Hebrew School that homosexual acts aren't funny and are roundly condemned in the Bible," said Dr. Gary Cass, of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission. "Appearing as a sarcastic, rotund Christ, Black distorts the Bible and condones shameful, homosexual acts. Associating Christ with perverse activity is an affront to all people of faith, especially Christians. Apparently Black and company find it hilarious to falsely accuse Christians while they intentionally distort the Bible. Black ought to apologize."

In the video, Black as Jesus questions how homophobes can casually eat shellfish while condemning gays and lesbians, despite the fact that both are mentioned in Leviticus as being abominations. Then, he goes on to horribly, offensively remind everyone that the United States was founded on separation of church and state.

The coalition then tells people via an "action item" to express their disapproval by calling Jack Black's publicist, thereby graciously providing Black with lots of crazy-people-ranting raw material for a follow-up video. If you'd like to call the Christian Anti-Defamation their number is 866/ 508.2232. Tell em' Queerty sent you.

8. Especially since Jesus was almost certainly...
Short, black haired, swarthy skinned, bearded and had a prominent nose. He was, after all, a Middle Eastern Jew despite the alleged fact that his Father was from out-of-town. Personally, I find all the depictions of a clean-shaven, blond, Aryan (in a Nazi sense) Jesus exceedingly offensive.

2. Homosexual acts aren't funny
Having been personal witness to several funny heterosexual acts/inconviences/accidents, I find it hard to believe that there are no homosexual acts that aren't similar in hillarity.

Apparently the priests are trying to dictate humor now.

3. Just an example

Whilst engaging in sex, on more than one occasion (and with different partners), there is sometimes a communal moment. Not the anticipated communal climax, but a tangent happening.

Heavy into the 6th missionary inning, both bodies are glowing with sweat, heaving to and fro and coming together in a momunmental moment of intimacy. The bodies stick together, with the sweat, creating a small vacuum-like-condition betwixt the two bodies. The heaving to and fro continues and ultimately the bodies digress and the vacuum breaks in this huge farting noise that emanates from the very center of your conjoined kundalini. You both hear it, make eye contact and acknowledge, "That really just happened", even though it doesn't matter, its the bottom of the sixth and this is a nine inning game at the very least.

In this moment, you must find it within yourself to be able to look your partner in the eye and demand, "That wasn't me!"

4. OK

Whether you are referring to straight or gay, the only image that goes along with that is my friends, and I didn't need that.

I'm scarred for life now, thank you. :)

I honest to God don't know, and am genuinely curious.

6. Well, someone missed the point!
Notice they don't try to defend themselves against the implied charges of "picking and choosing" what parts of the Bible they want to enforce.

Probably too busy eating bacon to get around to that...

12. "homosexual acts aren't funny " but Broadway shows are boffo!
Marc Shaiman wrote Prop8 the musical and also Hairspray!

I heard him interviewed with Jack Black and John C. Riley and Jack Black suggested making it a full length musical and Marc seemed to light up with the idea!!! Who knows, it may be on Broadway someday!

13. I'd have to agree -- an apology is in order...
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 03:07 PM by ohm_moyh_gawd
...since the fundies as portrayed in Marc Shaiman's number are nowhere near as ugly, spiteful, malicious and ignorant as the brand of fundie I've had the misfortune of encountering too many times during my life. And there's no question that they don't have the ability to dance as well as suggested in the video. They've clearly been misrepresented.

(If the fundies are upset about, it's gotta be a good thing...)

Protesting here just proves that they totally missed the point.

Then again, fundies usually miss the point anytime "gay" comes up.

17. There's very little allowance for tolerance in modern Talibangelical Christianity
There are good-hearted Evangelicals, I'm sure. It's just that they keep ceding the stage to the hypocritical completely un-Christ-like buttheads. The Talibangelicals can't stand the thought of allowing other people to be treated in a reasonable manner. And so, they hunt for people to hate--it's the easiest form of accreting power, and, well, they're pretty philosophically lazy.

18. You nailed it with this:
"it's the easiest form of accreting power, and, well, they're pretty philosophically lazy."

I think the hard core of them are lost to us for at least another generation or two, but, for those people who are religious but not insanely fundy and dogmatic, there may be light that goes on when they see the inconsistencies of the extremists.

The problem,as you mentioned about accreting power, is that along with power comes money.

They know damned well that every time they trot out anti-gay rhetoric wallets and purses open to them.

They should have to work for their damned daily bread, or, take away the tax exempt status of political groups masquerading as churches.

19. There's a New Testament/Evangelical theology concept also at play
How will you know that someone is truly a Christian?

Through Grace they are saved, but you will know them by their actions. People cannot be saved through deed, because all fall short of Jesus' example, but they persevere in the attempt to care for everyone. One of my favorite daydream images is when judgment comes at last, and the rightwing fanatics try to claim that they followed Jesus' teaching, and he points at a small group of minority people including LGBT types and reminds them again as you do unto the least of these, my brethren, you do unto me. Very poetic and sharp imagery there. Then again, this was a man who had the temerity to praise a Samaritan in a parable.

20. I don't know if you saw this thread here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x98503

It's about the Newsweek article about gays and faith.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/172653

>>Our Mutual Joy
Opponents of gay marriage often cite Scripture. But what the Bible teaches about love argues for the other side.<<

If you haven't had a chance to read the article, I think you will enjoy it.
