From an email from sldn.org:
President-elect Obama announced yesterday that he is re-appointing President Bush's Defense Secretary, Robert Gates.
Since taking the position in 2006, Robert Gates has seen firsthand the impact of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." No one knows better than Secretary Gates that the U.S. armed forces cannot continue turning away qualified young Americans based on sexual orientation.
Please sign our letter to Secretary Gates, encouraging him to support President-elect Obama's position to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell":
http://www.sldn.org/gatesLast year, Secretary Gates made the following statement about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell":
"It is my responsibility to execute that policy as effectively as we can as long as the law is what it is."
But as Defense Secretary, Robert Gates plays an important role in deciding what that law states. The Secretary of Defense -- and all of our military leaders at the Pentagon -- advise the President and Congress about what's best for the military -- including whether or not we should replace "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" with a nondiscrimination law.
Please ask Secretary Gates to stand with President-elect Obama, over 100 admirals and generals, and the majority of Americans in support of repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell":
