Pro & Anti-Gay Amendment Supporters Clash At Indiana Capitol
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/03/030805Indiana.htm

State police had to separate pro and anti-gay marriage demonstrators inside the Indiana Statehouse Tuesday.

Nearly 2,000 people on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue converged on the Capitol to lobby legislators over a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay weddings.

The resolution has been approved by the Senate and is now pending before the House. Indiana already has a Defense of Marriage law but many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say it is not enough to prevent judges from allowing gay marriage.

In Indiana, the state House of Representatives passed a broad child welfare bill
that included language on parental rights.41 The bill, promoted by Citizens
Concerned for the Constitution, a right-wing, virulently anti-gay group,42 was
opposed by social service agencies, school groups and police departments.43 The
original bill also contained a provision that gave people falsely accused of
abuse access to transcripts of the reports of suspected abuse which, according
to Indiana Family and Social Services Administration estimates, would have
jeopardized up to $35 million dollars in federal child protection money because
federal law requires such reports to be confidential.

Miller Addresses Same-Sex Marriage and Civil Union Debate

Indianapolis – Indiana gubernatorial candidate Eric Miller announced his official position concerning state-recognized same-sex marriages and civil unions today at the Indiana Statehouse.

As Indiana marriage laws are being legally challenged and other courts around the United States are also reviewing the issue of same-sex marriages and civil unions the majority of Hoosiers want their leaders to defend the traditional marriage and family.

“Our society is built on marriage being between one man and one woman. To change the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples is to jeopardize the very future of our society,” Miller stated.

Outlining a position he has held for over 20 years, Miller went on to explain, “If same-sex marriages are recognized, negative consequences are sure to follow. Once Hoosiers think about the logical consequences of throwing out the traditional definitions of family and marriage the percentage of Hoosiers in support of defending our traditions is even higher.”

Two situations emphasizing the negative outcomes of state recognized same-sex marriages:

*

By law, if the state recognizes same-sex marriages and civil unions, then schools would have to include specifics regarding homosexual activity along with heterosexual activity in sex education curricula. Schools would have to go beyond the current sex education program to explain details about how couples of the same-sex engage in sexual activity and include it as a normal, healthy choice for young people.

*

Indiana business owners and insurance companies would no longer have any choice or control as to whether or not homosexual partners would be covered under their company insurance plans as is currently the case. By law, they would be required to extend coverage to employees’ state-recognized homosexual partners.

“Indiana school children and business owners shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of this latest item on a faltering social agenda,” stated Miller.

Miller’s position on this important issue formed before he hit the campaign trail for governor and has long been known to Hoosiers. As the founder and former executive director of Advance America, Indiana’s largest pro-family, pro-business and pro-tax reform organization, Miller began and continues to lead an effort in Indiana enabling citizens to get more engaged in the social debate over state-recognized same-sex marriages. Thousands of Hoosiers have pledged their support for the proposed federal marriage amendment by signing petitions distributed by Miller. The constitutional amendment, if passed, would define marriage in America as being between one man and one woman only.

President George Bush stated in his State of the Union speech given earlier this month, “Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.”

Miller agrees with the President and also feels the will of the people needs to be heard for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization.

“It’s time for someone to draw the line and stand up for what is right and appropriate,” said Miller. “As the next governor of Indiana I will support Indiana law defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman only and veto any law contrary to that definition,” pledged Miller.

Miller continued, “I feel it is time that Hoosier voters know where their candidates stand on this important issue before they head to the polls in May and November to elect their next governor. This issue is important not only on the national level, but here in Indiana as well, and it should not be ignored simply because it is controversial. Hoosiers have a chance to protect Indiana law before outside courts determine our course for us.”

Miller will be testifying on behalf of Senate Joint Resolution 7 authored by Senator Brandt Hershman Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM in the Indiana Senate Chamber.

“The institution of marriage is under attack right now in Indiana. Current Indiana law is inadequate to protect the sanctity of marriage. Amending the Indiana Constitution to protect marriage by banning same-sex marriages and same-sex civil unions is the right thing to do. The time to act is now,” Miller concluded.

Eric Miller is a Republican Indiana gubernatorial candidate who is an attorney and the Founder and former Executive Director of Advance America, Indiana’s largest pro-family, pro-business, and pro-tax reform organization. Miller started Advance America over 23 years ago and has grown its network to over 500,000 Hoosiers including 41,000 families, 1,500 businesses, and 3,800 churches.

Eric and his family live in Hendricks County.
