Has Obama spoken out against Prop. 8? I would certainly appreciate if he did.

To be fair, I'm not sure anyone has even focused on this issue outside of local media in California, so perhaps he hasn't had much of a chance to speak in opposition to it, but given how popular he is, it would help guide voters away from voting "yes."

1. Since it's a state issue only, I seriously doubt
he'll say anything about it.

6. Obama already has CA
so it would not help him, and for him to draw attention to the issue is a GOP dream.

It would be the right thing to do, but too costly politically - right now.

Obama rejects proposed California gay marriage ban
By Aurelio Rojas

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who previously said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, has announced his opposition to a California ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages.

In a letter to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club read Sunday at the group's annual Pride Breakfast in San Francisco, the Illinois senator said he supports extending "fully equal rights and benefits to same-sex couples under both state and federal law."

"And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states," Obama wrote.

Don't be fooled by some of the leftover Clinton partisans on this forum who think Obama is a vicious, anti-gay bigot.

8. Niiiice primary rehashing -- totally unnecessary, but you know that
And, even though Senator Obama isn't vicious, and I wouldn't really call him a bigot, I think his stance on GLBT rights is less than... vigorous. Oh wait, since I'm taking to you: GLB rights. 'kay?

Wait, I forgot I'm talking to the sole voice of reason in the GLBT Forum.

7. State vs Federal Issue
What I've gathered from Obama's views on the Constitution is that he supports states rights in the few areas of sovereignty they have left. It would be a political liability, sorry to say, and that is clearly why he hasn't brought this issue up on the stump. In his defense, there are much more pressing issues to the majority of Americans -and as polls have shown- the people are more receptive to economic issues than social issues currently.

13. He has spoken out against it. So, so much for your "much more pressing issues" than civil equality.
Fuck.
