A movie came on the Lifetime movie channel about Gwen Araujo today and it was actually really good for a Lifetime movie. I was surprised that they actually cast a male to play her (considering so many movies about transwomen use cisgendered women to play them). It was really good though, Mercedes Ruehl played her mom and did a great job; I spent half the movie wanting to shake the shit out of her and the other half totally rapt at watching her daughter struggle with her identity. The actor who played Gwen was totally believable too; watching the way she lit up once she fully embraced being trans was amazing. I didn't know a whole lot about her story before the movie, other than the very basics that she was a transwoman who was murdered...it made her much more real. It's sad though, the way we never really hear the stories of transfolk unless something horrible happens to them.
The movie's called A Girl Like Me, if you want to check it out. It's admittedly painful to watch (we all know how this one ends :( ) but very sensitive to the case and respectful of trans issues, I thought. Not bad at all for a Lifetime movie.
