Harvey Milk Day email on Snopes.com
Snopes.com does not allow material from their website to be reproduced, so I won't do it here. However, it is important for everyone to be aware that this email is being circulated, however much they would like to ignore it or refute its importance. The measure stands a good chance of being passed. I just attended a same-sex wedding this Saturday, and if anyone had seen the ripple of love and happiness that spread out from the couple being united, their families embracing the two men and the families enjoying the celebration of their two sons' love, perhaps they would think twice about this deceptive and disgusting email at all seriously. Here's a portion of it:

Email example contributed by NGJ, Sep. 19, 2008:

Subject: : AB 2567

I just called, this is true! (The Number to call is: 1 916-445-2841) It took 4 "redial" calls to get through. Then key in 1, then 2, then 1, then 2 for a NO vote.

Please take a moment to voice your NO vote! Just one more reason to move from wacky CA. I have nothing against gays and believe they shouldn't be discriminated against but to have a gay day in elementary schools is going too far.

Dear Friends: This is an issue that is pretty much going under the radar, and I think we all need to make this telephone call.

This is real. It took less than 30 seconds. It is just a recording and pressing 2 to say NO. Please read it!!!

This link is from Snopes.com, a website set up to debunk Urban Legends and misinformation. I've also included a link to the HRC website. Please be informed and maintain the right to be able to recognize your union with marriage. This should be a choice all adults are able to have. I encourage all of you to visit the Snopes page, or even better lend your support to defeating AB 2657 this November, if you are a registered California voter. We can move this right forward.

1. bill passed by the California legislature seeks to designate May 22 as Harvey Milk Day.Status:True
(Here's how to do it on a windows pc. "Control A" to select all. "Control C" to copy all. Then paste and delete what you don't want)

(clipped a bit from your snopes link, what follows is the nasty email going around.)

Already on Governor Schwarzenegger's desk is a very bad bill that will push even more homosexual, bisexual, and transsexual indoctrination upon children as young as kindergarten. AB 2567 would designate every May 22 as 'Harvey Milk Day' in California's government school system.

Harvey Milk was a homosexual activist who was a San Francisco supervisor until he was killed in 1978. Milk championed homosexual experimentation,
sexual activism, and the abolishment of sexual boundaries. He also regarded organized religion as dangerous.

The text of AB 2567 states that 'On Harvey Milk Day, exercises remembering the life of Harvey Milk and recognizing his accomplishments as well as the contributions he made to this state' should be conducted; specifically, 'all public schools and educational institutions are encouraged to observe ... and conduct suitable commemorative exercises.' In other words, anything and everything Harvey Milk believed in or is now purported to believe in will be inculcated into children's impressionable minds.

If signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger, every May 22, AB 2567 will positively portray to children homosexual experimentation, homosexual 'marriages,' sex-change operations, and anything else that is 'in the closet.' There are no limits on the 'suitable commemorative exercises' that can be conducted. Obviously, AB 2567 has nothing to do with academic excellence.

ACTION: CALL SCHWARZENEGGER TO STRONGLY OPPOSE AB 2567 AND URGE HIM TO VETO AB 2567.

Dial 916-445-2841
(clipped the remainder which includes accurate info as to what this bill is)

3. He wasn't "killed"; he was *assassinated*.
>>>>Harvey Milk was a homosexual activist who was a San Francisco supervisor until he was killed in 1978. Milk championed homosexual experimentation,

Window washers who fall who fall off scaffolds are "killed" when they hit the ground. Milk was *murdered* by a RW antigay nut with a ( probably legal) gun.

>>>>>>He also regarded organized religion as dangerous.>>>>>>>

*Dangerous*?!?! Organized religion???!?!

Nah. Craziest thing I ever heard of.

2. The bigotry is astounding. Calling a "Harvey Milk Day" a "Gay Day"
Like calling "Martin Luther King Day" a "Black Day." I guess there are still people around who resent that too. God forbid we have any holidays commemorating anyone but straight white men.

5. Good point!
Back in 1990, I took a Sociology class on social movements. One day the class watched a video about Harvey Milk and I came to admire him. BTW, the guy who assassinated Milk was having some personal problems and wasn't exactly playing with a full deck. I guess he was one of those right-wing guys who need to blame someone for their problems, and go out to shoot a "minority" person.

Remember that recent church shooting? It was a conservative man who had lost his job, and blamed all his problems on liberals.

Marc Lepine, who shot several women at a Montreal technical school about twenty years ago, blamed his problems on women.

It saddens me that GLBT people are still a target for mindless hate.

6. The guy who killed Milk was a former SFPD officer and SF Board of Supervisors member

Dan White... he killed the city mayor that day first.
White now occupies a 6' deep patch of earth outside San Francisco... killed himself after serving a few years in prison.

~*~*~*~*~

As an aside, guess who got the mayor's vacated office?

Dianne Feinstein

7. There's a scary pattern with this.
A number of years ago, a man came into a San Ysidro McDonald's restaurant and shot 21 people. He was a conservative who believed the reason why he was unemployed was because of the illegal immigrants. Most of his targets were people of Mexican-American descent. The victims included children, and in one case, an eight-month-old baby.

When people I know don't take the extreme right-wing conservatives seriously and find their antics laughable, I recall many incidents like this one, and know different.
