Three Years for Killing a Gay Man
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 06:51 PM by canis_lupus
Stephen Moller, 19, whose single punch to Sean Kennedy, a gay man outside a gay bar in Greenville, South Carolina led to Kennedy's death, was sentenced on June 11 to three years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. The grand jury found "no malicious intent" so the prosecutor dropped a murder charge. While no evidence was produced that Moller specifically acted on a hatred for gay people, shortly after the attack he "called a girl that Kennedy was with outside the bar and left a voice message mixed with laughter, profanity, and anti-homosexual epithets bragging about the assault," Greenville Online reported.

Kennedy's head hit the pavement after the punch and he suffered fatal brain damage.

The judge could have given Moller five years, but wanted to try to rehabilitate him, the report said. He ordered him to take anger management classes and drug counseling. Moller's defense attorney pleaded against prison where "there are some bad people" and "he's going to be exposed to things he's never seen."

You're fuckin'-A right about there being "some bad people" in prison, counselor. And when your piece of shit client get there, there will be one more.

Edited to add the following story from the same source (Gay City News):

Six Years for Blowing a Man

Glenn Murphy, Jr., former chair of the Clark County, Indiana Republican Party pleaded guilty to performing oral sex on a sleeping man, 22, who stayed at his house after a party. The man awoke, brushed Clark away, and left, but later taped a conversation with Murphy during which Murphy apologized and begged him not to report it to the police, the Courier-Journal reported.

Under the plea, Murphy will be sentenced to six years in prison, with four suspended.

Really brings home the fucked-up priorities we have in this country.

I wish the worst for that hatemongering fucker in prison. The worst.

I get so fucking pissed reading about this homophobic shit. Yet another GLBT person is dead because of hate.

My sincerest condolences to Sean Kennedy's family.

5. And Sean Kennedy is dead.
Words fail me how throughly pissed off I am reading about this shit. A gay man is murdered and his killer virtually gets off scot free.

No, we don't need federal hate crimes legislation. Gosh no, we sure don't. All is just fine in America today for GLBT people.

6. The point is, it was involuntary manslaughter.
He slugged the guy, an incident that happens outside a bar in this country about every ten minutes. He didn't intend to kill him. The most he could have gotten was five years in any case. His homophobia is irrelevant.
