Stephen Moller, 19, whose single punch to Sean Kennedy, a gay man outside a gay bar in Greenville, South Carolina led to Kennedy's death, was sentenced on June 11 to three years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. The grand jury found "no malicious intent" so the prosecutor dropped a murder charge. While no evidence was produced that Moller specifically acted on a hatred for gay people, shortly after the attack he "called a girl that Kennedy was with outside the bar and left a voice message mixed with laughter, profanity, and anti-homosexual epithets bragging about the assault," Greenville Online reported.
Kennedy's head hit the pavement after the punch and he suffered fatal brain damage.
The judge could have given Moller five years, but wanted to try to rehabilitate him, the report said. He ordered him to take anger management classes and drug counseling.
Moller's defense attorney pleaded against prison where "there are some bad people" and "he's going to be exposed to things he's never seen." http://www.gaycitynews.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19787665&BRD=2729&PAG=461&dept_id=568857&rfi=6You're fuckin'-A right about there being "some bad people" in prison, counselor.
