Az Bill Would Allow Anti-Gay Slurs In Schools
(Tucson, Arizona) The Arizona Senate has given preliminary approval to legislation barring schools from discriminating against religious beliefs, a move opponents say will encourage students to bully gay students.

Sen. Linda Gray (R), one of the bill's sponsors said the measure is necessary because some school officials are violating the constitutional rights of students by not allowing them to speak out about issues.

But Democrat Sen. Debbie McCune Davis said there has to be limits. She proposed an amendment that would bar bullying in schools on the basis of race, religion and sexual orientation.

Republicans opposed the move. Sen. Jack Harper (R) said the amendment would negate the purpose of the bill by allowing the very type of religious discrimination the legislation is trying to end.

1. Why not propose an amendment that restricts schools to teaching useless things like
reading, writing, math, and history and let the parents and others doddle with the dogma. None of these topics relevant to schooling and both sides are freakin' nuts as far as I'm concerned. They put their own interests ahead of *gasp* the common good, evil ol' commie me... :eyes:

13. Whatever it takes to condemn, bully and hate others
That seems to be the definition of Christian these days, because so few others are willing to stand up against this perception.

14. That's because they need to be oppressed for the end times to start
Clearly the current environment is much, much worse than when they were being thrown to the lions. :sarcasm:

7. It would also allow racial slurs.
There are plenty of religious groups who have race supremacy or separatism as fundamental components of their theology.

11. I'm almost certain she will
I'm just embarrassed this was even introduced. The only thing I cling to is that we're the only state that rejected a DOMA ballot measure.

Time to give more money to Equality Arizona.

12. Unbelievable
I really hope that if this actually gets anywhere, the governor vetoes it.

I can't believe this might get somewhere. Let me get this right: fundy christians want their children to be able to tell their classmates they're going to hell because the classmate doesn't believe what the fundy christian child has been brainwashed into believing?

Doesn't that infringe on other people's freedom of religious expression?

16. Bigotry is not a Christian value
Nor is bullying. Hey reich wingers: If you want your kids to learn nothing but hatred, home school them so they can be ignorant little bastards like yourselves.
