Hard won domestic partnership benefits could be wiped out if Wisconsin approves a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage the city attorney for Madison said Thursday.

The amendment would ban same-sex marriage and civil unions. It could be on the November 2006 ballot.

"A number of benefits that flow to unmarried domestic partners under Madison's ordinances, contracts and city policies likely would be found to create a 'legal status ... substantially similar to that of marriage' and would, therefore, be declared void," Michael May wrote in a legal opinion requested by city council.
