I watched a couple of good documentaries tonight.
I saw Small Town Gay Bar, which is sad and wonderful and a very interesting look at being LGBT in the rural Bible Belt through the eyes of the patrons of a local gay bar. It made me realize how much I take for granted living in a big, relatively progressive city, and it really made me appreciate what rural LGBT have to go through just to survive. Kevin Smith (that one) executive produced it, and it was really well done.

Then I watched The Believers, which I'd actually DVR'd off Logo a while back and never got around to. This one is about an all-transgender choir, and was also really interesting. Ironically enough, they were part of a UCC church. The thing that struck me was how diverse the choir was; there were MTF, FTM and everything in-between, and it was also very racially diverse, much more so than choirs usually are. The stories of the choir members and their struggles with reconciling their Christian faith with their gender identity were poignant. There were also some funny moments too. And hey, they were a damn good choir. :)

1. I really want to see "Small town gay bar."
Considering I have lived in several small towns, some without a gay bar, I thought it would be a very interesting documentary. Now, I live in a fairly gay-positive city, yet get to hear how gay patrons were pulled out of a bar and beaten in the street and the police didn't arrive for 45 minutes and when they did, they didn't arrest a single person. The second largest event in the city is completely ignored by all media outlets (Southern Decadence) despite it being almost as large as Mardi Gras. Small town, big city, we always seemed to be ignored, except when we are causing elections to be lost. :sarcasm:

3. was that trans choir in SF?
if it was -- they were also highlighted in a documentary about gay choral groups that held a big event in canada a while back.

and the story of the church they belong to -- if it's the same -- is very, very interesting.

5. two other outstanding documentaries dealing with transsexuals
I have seen within the last year are "Southern Comfort" and "Red without Blue". I loved them both LOTS.

"Southern Comfort" is about a female to male transsexual who dies of ovarian cancer because nobody wants to treat him. "Red Without Blue" is about twin gay brothers and one becomes MTF transsexual.

http://www.redwithoutblue.com/

I HIGHLY recommend both. very moving.

6. Small town gay bar
was good. I watched it on Netflix about two months ago. It kind of reminded me about the area I grew up in. I haven't seen the other one. I will have to check it out.
