Need help with lying initiative signature gathers in CA
I was just approached by a initiative signature gather that lied to me about the petition. I did not sign it - she told me it would LEGALIZE gay marriage - when I asked to look at the initiative it was the new one to BAN equal marriage. She was lying to get a signature (this is a very gay part of SD). She refused to give me her name saying only she worked for "VIctory" and she had no phone number for them. She was also getting signatures for a city ordinance here. I did take her picture on my phone however. Im not sure I need to contact with this information but someone needs to know whats going on.

1. You've just done a public service
and would do an even bigger one if you'd put it on the GLBT board at Craigslist and any local message boards you can find.

People need to know there are LYING SCUM out there trying to trick you into signing right wing bullshit petitions.

3. The fact that this woman feels the need to lie about it
shows that she realizes just how wrong she is.

You have to wonder what the (*&% is going on in someone's head sometimes.

Then again... maybe I'm better off not having that kind of (*&$ed upness in my head...

5. To them any form of deception is OK if it's in the name of "family values"
I'm amazed that the cognitive dissonance alone doesn't make their heads explode.

6. There's an easy way to keep your head from hurting with something like that...
don't think. Period. Ever. If you think, then you'll eventually get around to thinking about the dissonance and your head will go *POP*.

Personally, I refuse to stop thinking. Just won't do it. :P

4. It may have been these dirtbags
http://www.protectmarriage.com/">Protect Marriage

The RRRW stoops to every lowball tactic to accomplish their agenda. Fearmongering, distorting the truth, lying, etc. Often they try the bait and switch method with those petitions because they know most people wouldn't sign one prohibiting same-sex marriage. They say it's for SS marriage (as in your case) or for something else entirely. Then they go on with the claim that so many people are against SS marriage when that's just not the case--they just duped lots of people.

Go to KnowThyNeighbor.org for an eye-opening experience. You'll not only discover who signs those petitions, but who discovered their names on them when they didn't really do so (such as when they didn't do it at all or when they were duped into it by deceptive techniques).

7. If I see these people
I will pretend to want to sign the petition, then rip it to shreds. In fact, I'd love to see some activists join as undercover gatherers, then make sure those signatures never get submitted.

I live in SD...if you tell me where this happened, I'll gladly go there and trash a few pages of petition. :)

8. If you tried that in Washington, you would get arrested for committing a felony
I need to look up the actual statute, but as I recall, it is "felony interference with an election" or somesuch to take an initiative petition that others have signed and damage it in any way other than as allowed by law (if the petition drive does not get enough signatures, the petitions must be shredded to protect the voters' personal information, for example.) Even if the petition is blank, you could legitimately be charged and convicted of theft and petty vandalism.

I certainly understand your outrage, but committing a blatantly illegal act does not help anyone's cause.
