Gays and lesbians across Australia united in a day of national protest on the second anniversary of the Howard Government’s amendment to the Commonwealth Marriage Act banning same-sex marriage.
On Sunday, thousands joined in protests held simultaneously in most major capital cities including Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart as well as regional hubs including Lismore, Blue Mountains, Wagga Wagga and far-flung Dubbo.

“Mr Bracks, you have the opportunity to become a leader of historical significance” (Gay Independent MP Andrew Olexander) said, challenging the Victorian Premier Steve Bracks to allow the bill to be debated in parliament, declaring, “"The winds of change have come Mr Bracks, for gays and lesbians – not only in Victoria but throughout the whole of Australia. There will be no turning back until we’ve won our freedom, our dignity and our respect.”

Following the speeches, 55 Victorian gay and lesbian couples then took part in a mass commitment ceremony on the steps of the Victorian Parliament calling for gay civil unions to be recognised followed by a ‘champagne reception’ held at the Melbourne Town Hall.
