Or at least their corporate spokesman does. They became a sponsor of major league baseball this year and all season they've been featuring Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz in their advertising campaign.

Two years ago, long before he signed the contract with Home Depot, he had this to say:

7. I've had business with them, for a home improvement, I encountered

People in at the desk in their lumber department who couldn't multiply. Many, many mistakes were made with my multi-thousand dollar order. Stuff was brought to my house and dumped, damaging some of the most important materials with large scratches from the fork lift, too much of stuff I didn't need, not enough of stuff I did need. I had workmen waiting around for things to work with. It was a Nightmare!!

Lowe's is further from my house, but that's where I'm going from now on.

And why does AP blithely describe him this way? Is there any evidence that his practice is "devout"? Do others describe him that way?

Seems to me the copy should have read " self-proclaimed devout Christian", or something akin.

Judging by his remarks alone, he's simple-minded and contemptuous. This is all we can assume. Many Christians would be embarrassed by his conflating this issue with with Christianity... "devout" or otherwise.

My quarrel isn't so much with Home Depot or even Smoltz; rather , it bugs me that AP.... in a way that is very common in the MSM... implies in an off-handed manner that homophobia ( in this case Smoltz) automatically flows from belief in Christian doctrine.

Just because John Smoltz said "something" about gay people and then Home Depot hired John Smoltz as a spokesperson doesn't mean that Home Depot agrees with everything John Smoltz says. Whatever he says. I don't even, at this point, believe that he said anything. Whatever it was.
