Commentary: Media provides cover for assault on traditional marriage

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- On June 7, the U.S. Senate voted for a second time on an amendment to define marriage in the U.S. Constitution as being exclusively between one man and one woman.

Again this year, the amendment failed to pass by a wide margin, falling 18 votes shy of a required two-thirds majority. The final tally was 49 in favor, 48 opposed.

Rarely has there been a greater disconnect between members of the Senate and the American people who put them in power. With the help of the media, which laid down "cover" by claiming voters didn't care about marriage, 40 Democrats, one Independent and seven Republicans turned their backs on this most basic social institution.

1. "Rarely has there been a greater disconnect ..."
Oh, REALLY?

How about just days later, when the Senate failed to pass the Feingold/Kerry plan to get out of Iraq be an even wider margin?

Idiot. :eyes:

3. The purpose of our constitution...

is not to preserve social mores, but to provide a working document of the operation and limits of our government.

7. It doesn't get anymore toxic than Dobson.
This "traditional family" bullshit is nothing but a code word for an idealized straight-white-xtian-America. It's a myth -- all of it.

What an outrage.

8. The "traditional family" IS a minority today
All you have to do is look at the statistics. Straights changed "traditional marriage" DECADES ago, not gays. They can try to legislate all they want. They can even attempt to impose social/religious codes into the Constitution, if we let them. But they will never change PEOPLE. It is all called unenforceable laws. I give you Prohibition. What happened last time they tried to legislate "morality" (drinking, adultery, sodomy, etc.)? People IGNORED the law.

9. his rants also ignore the fact that gays ARE
we just ARE. We aren't going away, we aren't getting less gay, we won't be making traditional families even if they could make it illegal to BE gay again. So the assault isn't on traditional families at all. The assault is on gay families, and on the families of our kin, friends, children, and good hearted Americans who can see what nonsense all of this is.

10. Wake up jagoff!
The repressive amendment failed twice for a reason. The only people who actually want this thing are the fundie whackjobs. You may think you are a "mainstream majority" of America but you aren't. Go to some corner to lick your wounds and STFU!
