NY Daily News Front Page: Mike Vows He'll Honor Gay Marriage

Mayor Bloomberg landed another left on the right yesterday, coming out strongly in favor of gay marriage - and vowing the city will perform same-sex wedding ceremonies, if allowed.
The Republican mayor used his weekly Sunday radio address on Memorial Day weekend to say he is "firmly opposed" to any constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage.

President Bush and other prominent Republicans endorse the Federal Marriage Amendment, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The measure is set for a Senate vote next month.

"The U.S. Constitution should be something that unites, rather than divides Americans," said Bloomberg, a life-long Democrat who joined the GOP to run for mayor in 2001.

"I do not believe that government should be in the business of telling people who they can and can't marry," he added during the address on 1010 WINS.

1. If Only More Democrats
would show this much courage.

What a great quote:
"The U.S. Constitution should be something that unites, rather than divides Americans,"

2. IMO this is just another "visual" attempt to rally the Christian right
to the polls in November. In other words they're winding it up as the number one wedge issue, once again, just in time for the November elections. The Christian right is a bit fed up with Bush, but if we can have some major cities showing gay marriages on the news every night the Republicans can at least say ( if the machines are still sufficiently rigged ) that they won on "family values" again.

Makes me so f'n sick. We don't hear anything about gay marriage, or very little anyway, until the elections come around and now the mayor of NYC, a Republican, comes out all in favor and will probably have someone marrying gays on the courthouse steps come fall.

I'm not saying I don't agree with Bloomberg, I'm just tired of it being used as a scare tactic to get a large chunk of the church pews emptied into the voting polls when this country is facing complete ruin by this Republican administration. I know Bloomberg is now Republican, but that won't matter. Just the words "gay marriage" are needed to get out that hateful, intolerant voter. And they ain't going to be voting Democrat.

It is nice to hear his positive views and I do appreciate the article. I've just gotten too cynical.

4. Are you suggesting
that Bloomberg is using this as a ruse knowing it will get the up-staters fired up? Because that would be so......... Republican.

Ditto on the cynical.

3. If HE can take leadership on this, why can't that Cox woman from GA?
or any other dem, for that matter? Why are we told that they HAVE to triangulate away our rights, "just to get elected, and after they take office, THEN you can get your rights"?

6. This is after he told city lawyers to appeal a decision that allowed gay..
marriages. The city's lawyers were successful and got the decision reversed. The issue is now before NY's highest court.
