The former chief justice of Australia's Family Court says the federal government is looking at society through a rear view mirror.

Alistair Nichols says it is time for the government to recognize the rights of same-sex couples - including adoption.

"I just don't see why same-sex couples should not be able to receive the same freedoms and rights as other people – and I don't see why their children should be discriminated against, either," Nicholson tells the Special Broadcasting Service.
