Amendment, GOP polls cast pall over Log Cabin confab
To be gay and Republican in 2006 presents an array of challenges, as President Bush’s approval ratings sink to historic lows in advance of mid-term elections and GOP leaders in Congress push for a vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

With those issues looming in the background, about 300 members of the Log Cabin Republicans gathered for the gay GOP group’s annual convention last weekend in Washington, D.C.

"I see a really, really big storm brewing for Republicans," said Amy Walter, senior editor of the Cook Political Report.

During a 2006 election outlook panel she led April 29 along with Bob Carpenter of American Viewpoint, a public-opinion research firm, the two agreed it’s not a good time to campaign as a Republican.

1. I never understood Log Cabin Republicans
WTF were they thinking? Did they actually believe the GOP would accept them at some point? Did they think all that "hate speech" was just a put-on?

Greed is a strong thing...live a comfy material life and let us poor slob queers raise Cain and do the dirty work that keeps the Log Cabin from sodomy charges.

4. I heard a comediene say once that...
"Money can't make you happy, but it can make you Republican"...

I forget who... Margaret Cho?

Hmmmm, though she was a lesbian stand-up comic who had a Comedy Central Special once... Google isn't helping...

5. They're not Gay, they're just Homosexual.

"Homosexual" is what you do; "Gay" is who you are.

It's an identity thing. If your homosexuality is a core part of who you are (and I think this is true for most of us), then you are gay. And if you think that being gay is just fabulous!, then you're queer, too. But if you "just happen to" enjoy same-sex sex, and otherwise it's no big deal, then you are just homosexual. Gays and queers are now "them", and it's a lot easier for you to actively support a party or a religion that goes out of its way to persecute "them".

BTW, being "just" homosexual doesn't necessarily make you a bad person. Look at Gore Vidal, one of the good guys. His hangup with the terminology is rooted in just this issue of identity. He would rather die than call himself "gay" or "queer", and he even has a problem with "homosexual", because to him, all these terms suggests something that you ARE, whereas his view is that same-sex sex is just something you DO. He prefers the odd term "homosexualist".

Anyway, enough of semantics. I think that if you "just happen to" like same-sex sex, but what you really care about is paying less income tax, then you are probably a Log Cabin Republican.
