Gays win skirmish over dates for dance

Copper Hills High is singing a new tune about gay couples who wish to bring same-sex partners to school dances.

No longer do they need written parental permission - a requirement from the principal that sparked a round of protests and a flurry of national attention.

The school's about-face delighted Jason Atwood, the 17-year-old senior who fought Principal Tom Worlton's rule.

"That is very exciting," Atwood said Tuesday. "Maybe I was wrong when I said Copper Hills wasn't tolerant. They're a lot more willing to work with students than I thought they were."

Hopefully we've come a long way since just a few years ago when I was a beard for all my gay friends at their proms.
