Sweetie darling - he's just pointing out how f*cked-up the meme is. :hug:

10. He is a genius, but he can be a homophobic sometimes.
Once when he was on the Bill Maher show he called Kerry "A man wearing panties." That is so offensive and homophobic and not funny. He should stick to making fun of racists and other bigots... and not trying to be one.

13. Not homophobic - anti-woman. Think with me a moment.
It's not very offensive, nor does it imply lesbianism or a dig at lesbianism, to say a woman wears boxers. To say that a man wears panties, however, is intended to be insulting.

The real source of this insult isn't homophobia. It's that women and femininity are understood to be lesser than men and masculinity. Therefore, to say that a man is like a woman is a dig at his character, going all the way back to "You run like a girl" or calling recruits "ladies".

14. Very insightful. Yes, it is sexist, too. But could it also
be transphobic? "Men who wear ladies clothes are wimps" sort of stereotype is sexist because it implies that women are wimps, but also says transexuals and transvestites are wimps.
I always hated the pink tutus refering to "wimpy male senators" because of that, too.

16. Probably also transphobic, but the root of transphobia is sexism
If both sexes and both genders were equal in power, rights, and esteem, then moving between them would be a non-issue. As it is, a male to female transsexual is seen as giving up superior male status, a female to male transsexual is seen as appropriating male status unjustly, and a person who transcends the gender binary entirely just confuses the shit out of everybody who needs to know for each person whether to speak up, across, or down.

FWIW, I find transwomen to be some of the bar none strongest people I have ever known.

22. Yep, FTM...
I've gone down the checklist, told my friends and family, and changed my screen name here as a first step. It's pretty funny. I expected to have this big dramatic hoorah about telling my friends and my family. Except for my husband (who apparently lived in a boat sailing down De Nile), everyone else had exactly the same reaction:

Well, duh.

Apparently, I have no door on my closet.

24. Eh, he hasn't been so cool
We separated for other reasons, and he's been trying to pin every problem we ever had on me being masculine. Also, he's re-remembered history such that he was surprised by my wearing men's clothes, even though I wore them to work every day when we first met and in the first year that we were married. But everyone else has been great!!

All I can say is that satire and parody sometimes falls short of it's intended target. When it misses the mark, it fails miserably. :hi:

25. Hi, 94119_San_Francisco.
Yes, but I wish people would cut out the Gay-bashing humor. There are plenty of politicians to make fun for DOING stupid things. I hate "Politician X is lesbian/gay/transperson" as some kind of insult. I don't care if it's talking about Boxer or Rice, it is homophobic any way you slice it.

5. Boondocks is great
He's just calling attention to things that are heard about, talked about, but we pretend aren't there. Anyone who's seen the film knows that neither of the lead characters exhibit "questionable masculinity."

6. Not sure, but I don't like...
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 11:00 AM by Meldread
I'm not sure if it's homophobic - the cartoon that is - but I do find using the term "Brokeback" as described offensive.

Although, I do find calling a purse a "man-bag" funny. Ahh... the insecurities of straight men.

Actually on a slightly related point, I've often wondered why men don't start using purses. I mean, other than the fact that most women's purses weigh a ton it seems like a useful tool. Just imagine all the stuff you could put into one that you might need, especially in the way of hygiene products.

7. I carry a "man-purse"
One of those "good for the back" one strap backpacks. I carry in it:

* my cell phone
* my PDA
* the book I'm reading at the moment
* a note book
* several pens
* business cards
* a small first aid kit
* a backup supply of allergy meds
* about $3 in change for the bus
* an umbrella (this is Seattle, after all)
* an eyeglass cleaning/repair kit

There is no way I'd be able to carry all of this stuff around otherwise. Oddly enough, though, I keep my wallet and keys in my pants pockets. How other men manage, I can't figure out.

8. I had a former co-worker call mine a "murse"
The contents of mine are very similar with the addition of:

• "Close Range" by Annie Proulx
• PowerBookG4
• Headphones for listening to iTunes
• LaCie 100GB backup hard drive
• Numerous geek cables so I can connect all my technology to each other or charge it up
• Travel size hand lotion and hand sanitizer

9. Yes, I'm referring more to the term "Brokeback" usage not the comic itself
The Boondocks can be great, but this sort of thing contributes to making
gay-bashing cool. Another slangy way to make fun of gay men. In high school everything bad was "so gay."
Now this uggh!

12. Yeah I know.
It always irked me to hear people say, "that's so gay". As if being gay were a bad thing. I mean, really, no one would go around saying "oh, that's so negro" or "damn, that's so breeder."

Although, I have to admit it would be funny if people started walking around using the term "breeder" in a derogatory manor to refer to straight people. Sadly, I don't think it'd get under their skins. I think it'd be the equivalent of being called a honkie or a cracker. As a white person, I really don't give a shit if someone calls me those things. I personally have no "connection" with my race, maybe it's because I identify more with being gay than being white. Not sure, would be interesting if that could be psychoanalyzed.

21. I don't know what to do in summertime
Usually, I keep all my crap in various jacket and pants pockets. I have to carry two different cell phones, which results in this short, hilarious Macarena of me trying to figure out which phone is ringing and where I've stashed it before it stops ringing.

27. could have been funnier if
he hadn't compared Brokeback to a masculinity challenge though. Wasn't that the point? It takes a real man to get it on with another dude - those pansy ass heteros can't even WATCH the damn movie without pooping themselves a little.

:evilgrin:
